    Fuzz Acid & Flowers:

A communal hippie band from Los Angeles who played an amalgam of psychedelia, classical, folk, jazz and latin styles. Their first album (produced by Dave Hassinger) is the best. The band's original drummer Alan Malarowitz appears only on two tracks of Melon, their third album:- I'm Happy Today and Join The Band. The rest of the album was recorded with a session drummer Ricky Fataar, most famous for his appearance in the "rockumentary" The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash (he's The Rutles' drummer Stig O'Hara), and touring with The Beach Boys in the early 1970's.

the Mike Stuart Span ~ 1996 ~ Timespan

    genre: psych

    country: uk

quality : lossless (flac, cue, log, booklet scans)

    time: 66:11 size: 349 mb

    misc.: '67-'69 recordings

    Biography by Richie Unterberger :

A band with a confusing name and a confusing history, the Mike Stuart Span did manage to record a classic British psychedelic single in 1967, "Children of Tomorrow." With its driving power chords, squealing guitar leads, and haunting harmonies, the song struck a classic midpoint between hard mod-pop and the early psychedelia of UK groups like the Pink Floyd and Tomorrow. The problem was that hardly anyone actually heard the record, as it was pressed in a run of 500 copies on a small independent label.

The Brighton group had been around since the mid-'60s, and recorded a few other singles for Columbia and Fontana with a much more conventional pop approach. There was actually no one named Mike Stuart in the act, which began to rely much more upon self-penned psychedelic material in 1967. Most of this never got beyond the demo/Peel session stage, though. The band were pressured by management to make an out-and-out pop single in 1968 that flopped, helping to squelch any prospects of the musicians asserting themselves as a significant presence in the British psych/prog scene.

In the late '60s, the Mike Stuart Span were actually featured in a BBC TV documentary entitled A Year in the Life (Big Deal Group), which charted the band's successes and (more commonly) failures over the course of a year. By the time it aired in September 1969, however, the group had changed their name to Leviathan, signed with Elektra, released a few singles, completed an unreleased album, and broken up. Nothing else they recorded matched the brilliance of "Children of Tomorrow," though most of their original material was infused with the same yearning for some sort of just-around-the-horizon utopia. But they left behind a number of demos that demonstrated a promising ability to wed hard psychedelic guitars with a fair knack for melody and harmony. Interest in the band increased in the 1980s when "Children of Tomorrow" was featured on a few psychedelic compilations. An entire album's worth of tracks, culled from singles, demos, and a BBC session, finally saw the light of day in the mid-'90s

    Scented Gardens Of The Mind:

Smets and Bauwer had previously played in the pop-rock formation Pebbles, while Chitschenko came from the jazz-oriented Mad Curry. All tracks on the Shampoo album were composed by Mets, Chitschenko and Cel De Cauwer. The album has some historical interest due to its unusual mixture of harmony pop (a la The Beatles and the first Argent album) and brassy jazz-rock (similar to Chicago and Colosseum). Interestingly, some very short fragments of the album predated the chamber rock of Univers Zero, indicating that their unique vision still had some roots in the general Belgian rock scene of the time. Shampoo's curious mixture fits in well in the jigsaw of Belgian rock between Wallace Collection, Waterloo, Placebo, Arkham and Pazop. Some years later this scene developed into great bands such as Abraxis, Cos and, most importantly, Univers Zero.

    ItalianProg:

Based on the beautiful voice of Alan Sorrenti's sister Jane, Saint Just began as a trio with mainly acoustic instruments and mixing together folk, psychedelia and classical influences. The very good results are demonstrated in their first album, released in 1973 on Harvest. The soft prog atmospheres are dreamy and enchanting, like in the opening Quando nel mondo distrutto incominciò la vita, and Alan Sorrenti also sang on a track, but the group failed to render the delicate sound on stage.

The second album is more in a rock direction, with sax player Robert Fix being replaced by two electric guitarists and a stable drummer. The result is less acoustic and more rhythm based, always on a very good level.

The band split after La casa del lago, with Jane starting a solo career under the name of Jenny Sorrenti.
