ProgArchives: DANCER were formed from remnants of Isle of Wight folk rockers SHIDE & ACORN and future famed film director the late Anthony Minghella. Minghella had previously appeared as keyboardist in a small jazz group known as EARTHLIGHT. The musicians were discovered by Wilf Pine, former manager of BLACK SABBATH and future reputed ranking member of the Gotti mafia syndicate in the United States. Pine secured the group studio time at Olympia in the Barnes suburb of London in 1972, where they recorded seven tracks over a month's period under the direction of GROUNDHOGS guitarist Tony McPhee. McPhee, despite having an arm in a cast offered the guitar solo to close the title track. DANCER dissolved soon afterwards and their recordings remained forgotten until copies emerged nearly thirty years later and were released by Kissing Spell. Minghella would go on to a lengthy and successful career as a film producer, while Athey and Cuffe would form the funk band BIG SWIFTY. ItalianProg: Another band from the 60's, Dalton from Lombardia released their debut single in 1967 and their first production also included a reworking of the Shocking Blue's Venus. This song, their fourth single, had a good success and the band also included for a short period the future PFM-member Mauro Pagani. The group was later reformed in 1972 by original keyboardist Temi Reduzzi with a new line-up that released a very good debut album with Riflessioni: idea d'infinito. With a great use of flute and good guitar riffs, the album has some very good moments, like Idea d'infinito with some Jethro Tull influences, Riflessioni and the closing Dimensione lavoro, while Cara Emily is a slow acoustic ballad. It has to be noticed that the album has a very short running time of around 30 minutes. The band had a moderate success and even won the first prize in a swiss Pop Festival in Zurich. After a good single in 1974, La donna e il bambino, the band had a line-up change with Reduzzi and flutist Alex Chiesa leaving to be replaced by keyboardist Giancarlo Brambilla and singer Massimo Moretti, but the second album Argitari (a title formed with the initials of the musicians' names) was on a lower level than their debut. Mainly built on acoustic guitar, it seems rather a solo album by singer/guitarist Cereda than a group record. Newcomer singer Moretti is only credited on backing vocals, and the sound is generally much weaker than on their debut LP. Also included is an unusual rendition of Bob Dylan's Blowin' in the wind called La risposta, and one of the best tracks, Visione di una notte d'estate (with old member Alex Chiesa on flute) is in fact a reworking of the single La donna e il bambino with different mix and lyrics, whose original subject had been considered too irreverent causing the track to be discarded from the Sanremo Festival selections. The band closed its career with a late commercial single in 1979. Two band members, Temi Reduzzi and Aronne Cereda, were also involved in a pop opera released in 1975, Paciana story, a mix of traditional folk and pop. Drummer Walter Locatelli formed Mo.Do. Reduzzi remained in the business with a dance band and a music shop near Bergamo.

Crack in the Cosmic Egg: From just outside Baden-Baden, Coupla Prog were typical of the type of organ-fronted bluesy rock band you'll have found in almost every European city at the time. Little in the way of imagination, they adapted themes from others and added copious amounts of classical music. Despite all this, and that they never made any impact on a wider front (no record contracts, nothing, remaining totally unknown) Coupla Prog were rather privileged with no less than four SWF radio sessions in 3 year history. The recent CD releases documenting those radio sessions are as follows: SPRITE, which documents sessions from February 1970 and April 1971 and shows their roots in British blues-rock and Vanilla Fudge, largely relying on the keyboard player to hold it all together. Not bad, it's all let down somewhat by a rather embarrassingly off-key vocalist. My favourites here are the classical numbers towards the end. EDMUNDO LOPEZ, a big conceptual suite involving the life of a reluctant soldier, all performed live in the studio with no possibility of correcting errors or adding overdubs, they were brave. Very often I'm reminded of Procol Harum, during their progressive phase, with a little Jane, Epsilon, and such like. DEATH IS A GREAT GAMBLER compiles later sessions, after Rolf Peters had died, with a new guitarist and drummer. This finds them in a much more keyboard fronted classical rock mood.

progarchives.com: COUNTRY LANE's "Substratum" seems to be well enough known, but it is very difficult to find information on the band itself. The album was recorded in 1973 with Raymond Amey on guitars, synthesizers, and vocals, Olivier Maire on organ, piano, spinet, and vocals, Jean-Francois Donze on drums, Giancarlo Duella on bass, and Freddy Von Kaenel on rhythm guitar and banjo. Swiss bands generally fit well alongside German artists, but COUNTRY LANE managed to set themselves apart. Like the others, they were mainly influenced by British artists of the time. However, where most were taking after the likes of E.L.P., Genesis, and Yes, COUNTRY LANE sounds more inspired by Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and psychedelic music. There are even some comparisons made to Nektar and Frank Zappa. They jam heavy at times, but also keep it melodic. Epic concept is present, as well as humor (in the form of a little vaudeville). The lyrics are sung in English, and the accent is very good. Were they rebels? Maybe not, but it is a diversion form the usual mid '70s Germanic prog.

Of course, Chango's first LP is a rip-off of Santana's 1970s sound, and if you want to dismiss it on the count of lack of originality, go ahead. What should not be overlooked though is the fact that the group played some very hot salsa jazz-rock. They did not do it better, but they sure did it well. Although not Carlos Santana, George Tacktikos studied the guitarist's playing closely and performs a few strong solos, especially on "Caminando" and "Chango." Thomas Alletto plays a mean organ, and singer Pepe Gomez matches any Santana singer. This first LP blends the raw energy of Abraxas and the subtleties of Caravanserail (maybe with something of Chicago's early pop sensibilities too), while delivering a more poppy and energy-driven charge than what Santana used to do. Side one contains the fiery "Walk on Hell" and "Caminando," truly the group's finest moment. The five songs on side two segue, alternating fast-paced numbers and slow instrumentals in true Santana fashion. "Solid Karma" stands out. This album was clearly well-produced and thought over, the song order being just right. One could do without the love-making sighs at the end of the last track. The god Chango, explain the liner notes, is "the representative of unbridled sexuality" -- the relentless rhythms of the previous 40 minutes were proof enough. This is German prog from the late seventies. Instrumentally, acoustic guitar, flute, harpsichord and a variety of keyboards lock together to make an extremely rich and beautiful musical backdrop, with some absolutely gorgeous themes. The music is melodic with detailed arrangements and interesting orchestration. The vocalist sounds remarkably like Peter Gabriel; lyrics are all in English. The sound could be described as "Planets" period ELOY meets "Moonmadness" period CAMEL, with a touch of MACHIAVEL. The reissue on CD of a real "must", a mythical disk from unknown musicians.

Stephan Kaske was 18 years old when he formed the first Mythos line-up in 1969 with Harald Weisse and Thomas Hildebrand. In 1971 they appeared live at a festival and attracted Ralf-Ulrich Kaiser's attention. This led to a contract with Ohr records. The first Mythos album was duly recorded during Autumn 197l. "Mythoett" starts the album in a manner very similar to Jethro Tull. This was a revised version of Handel's fireworks music, on which Kaske played brilliant flute. He would soon be celebrated as one of Germany's best flute players. "Oriental Journey" has an Eastern flavour, as the name implies. "Hero's Death" was, by the Mythos' standards, unusually guitar-dominated.
Definitively a poetic way to finish a classic album - one of the best Ohr-releases! Truly indispensable! Late in 1972 the original Mythos split up. Kaske attempted to assemble a new trio at the beginning of 1973, but this came to nothing. Then in December 1973 he teamed up with Robby Luizaga and Hans-Jurgen Putz for the production of a television soundtrack for "Die Superspinne".
One of the tracks was later to be found on Dreamlab (1975), entitled "Eternity". This album, Mythos' second one, was released on Ohr's logical successor: Kosmische Musik. It was another great work of a more cosmic and spacey nature. However, Kaske himself thought of Dreamlab as a 'B-work' more than all ordinary Mythos album - pre-ordered by label manager Ralf-Ulrich Kaiser. The album cover was also Kaiser's decision: drawings of Tarot cards by Peter Geitner. Kaske soon separated from the two studio musicians he had worked with previously and produced further soundtrack works. In the Summer of 1976 he formed the third Mythos line-up with: Sven Dohrow, Eberhard Seidler and Ronnie Schreinzer. This was indeed a changed Mythos concept, now concentrating on shorter, more commercial and rock-based songs.

This album (1st s/t) is a genuine treasure! Through the years, it has become immensely rare, and is now considered one of the monsters of German rock, fetching DEM 500 for mint copies. My Solid Ground was the one-off project. The recordings were done in February and April 1971 in Dieter Dierks' studio with Peter Hauke producing. The marvellous opening track "Dirty Yellow Mist" was as close as any group has reached into the atmosphere of Pink Floyd's Meddle album. The thirteen-minute track was driven by a monotonous, but very effective guitar riff. The organ passages really remind one of Richard Wright and there are pink pigs on the fold-out cover! "The Executioner" was a highly original and effective combination of mumbling vocal and heavy guitar and keyboard statements. There were three aggressive, punky rock songs: "Flash Part IV", "That's You", and "Handful of Grass". "Melanchonie" again recalls Pink Floyd, this time the mellow, peaceful romanticism of "Allan's psychedelic Breakfast". "Devonshire Street WI" was another highly original song, while the instrumental "X" ended the album. Definitely one of the ten best German albums of all time! It's a tragedy there were no further My Solid Ground albums. After this recording, all members seemed to drift back into obscurity and Hauke & Dierks were left to work with artists like Nektar and Omega.

Dreams Fantasies & Nightmares:
This is one of Brazil's top psychedelic groups and their albums are well worth tracking down. Formed in 1966, Mutantes made a few appearances on the "Jovern Guarda" T.V. show before teaming up with Gilberto Gill, who taught them how to mix rock 'n' roll with Brazilian culture. The backed Gil in 1967 when he appeared in the T.V. Record song festival and as three long-haired kids playing electrical instruments caused some controversy. This was a theme which accompanied them throughout their career. In 1968, they accompanied Caetano Veloso as he sang É Proibido Proibir at the International Song Festival in Sâo Paulo, wearing plastic clothes much to the outrage of some. Indeed, many wrote asking the event organisers to ban them.
In 1968, they participated in the seminal 1968 recording Tropicália Ou Panis Et Circensus along with Gil, Veloso, Tom Ze and Rogérlo Duprat.
Their 1968 debut was an album of considerable diversity and experimentation, which leads some to describe it as psychedelic. Elements of gimmickry and sound effects are apparent on the opening cut Panis Et Circenses and the finale Ave Gengis Khan. Others like Adeus Maria Fulo and Sentor F have those distinctive Latin rhythms, whilst Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour is a slow ballad with female vocals. Overall, diverse and interesting but not always entirely successful. Arnaldo apparently described the album as a mixture of Bosch and Salvador Dali.
A Divina Comédia Ou is also rich in diversity and experimentation. Ave, Lucifer, which opens with equisite female vocals, typifies this and ends with a beautiful swirl of Spanish guitar. The other highlights on an inconsistent album overall include Meu Refringerador Nâo Funciona, featuring good vocals and organ playing; Preciso Urgentemente Encontrar Um Amigo, which includes both of the former and distorted vocals and Haleluia, which as the title suggests has a choral feel and more upfront organ.
Mutantes E Seas Cometas No Pais Do Bauretz is musically diverse with very ethnic sounding cuts like Cantor De Mambo, acoustic material (Vida De Cachorro), funk/boogie (Dume Buggy), rock (A Hora E A Vez Do Cabelo Nascer), rock 'n' roll (the opening track) and the ambitious, wide-ranging title cut. An interesting, if not wholly successful, album.

Formed in November 1971, Maurice Bacon and Morgan Fisher had been in The Love Affair together. Their album was recorded in Rome, and was available in the UK only on import. It tends toward complicated keyboard-dominated compositons which often became boring. A second album an a Morgan Fisher solo album were also recorded in Rome, shortly after this debut, but neither was released. Subsequently, the band split in mid-1973 with Fisher later playing in Mott The Hoople. Morgan made further albums in the late seventies and early eighties.
