    ProgArchives:
"Instrumental music with vocal addition at its best! A bastard meeting between some musical individualists resulted in a series of records that stunned the world. High quality performance combined with musical integrity gives you a unique amount of satisfaction."
They were, at the end of the Seventies and in the Eighties, the Swedish representative of the collective Rock In Opposition founded by Chris CUTLER. I can tell you that their music is a blend of mostly instrumental 70's progressive rock, Scandinavian folk, jazz-fusion, avant-garde, RIO (Rock In Opposition) and World Music. The vocals in Swedish, the use of accordion, handbells, marimbas and percussions of all kinds gives a very personal touch to this music.
As was popular at the time, the germ of the SMM sound came from adapting traditional Scandinavian folk themes into modern music. After, there followed an intensive period of jam sessions, trying out all sorts of ideas, with unlikely combinations of folk, rock and jazz structures. "Klossa Knapitatet" (1974) expanded on their improvisational side, and maybe their best. It's a FUN album! The legacy of "Snorungarnas Symfoni" was the end of a phase, and was also where SMM history became complicated. Now the long awaited reunion on album for SMM is finally here. "Kaka" marks the return of the original line-up in 1999. While very good, the band's early energy and creativeness is hard to recreate some 23 years later. If you haven't heard them before, this album is a perfect starter. Highly recommended!
SMM to ZMM and other directions...
In January 1977, SMM reformed as the subtly renammed ZAMLA MAMMAS MANNA, to indicate a new start and a new style with much more fiery and distinctly RIO type of rock fusion. "Familjesprickor" (1980) was their final album, and by far the most intense. This album is, nonetheless, an excellent place to start.

Nazareth born Michel Sajrawy can easily join the ranks of seminal jazz guitarists. The guitarist and composer completed his musical studies 1996 to 2000 at the London College of Music under the direction of renowned chamber music composer Adam Gorb. In his own Dasam Studio in Nazareth, he has developed a sound that confronts the listener with his special „Desert Blues" – soulful, tricky jazz-rock lines and mysterious Arabic rhythms.
Michel has been awarded the Wilfred Joseph Prize (1998-99), Best Title in Music (2002) and the A. M. Qattan Foundation’s Performing Arts Grant for the year 2007.
He worked with Abboud Abdel'All, Bashir Abdel'All, Ahmad Al-Mukhtar, Samir Jubran, Alex Carpani, Manfred Leuchter, Travis Sullivan, Danny Zanker and Hector Morales. He composed music for several documentary films, arranged the music for various mini orchestral projects and produced radio jingles for the major brands in the country.
Debut album „Yathrib" (2006 Ozella Music) marks Sajrawy’s entrance into the vanguard of crossover artists who see themselves creating an uncompromising jazz sound between traditional and contemporary. He has been touring the globe tirelessly with his band ever since.. In Germany he performed at the Leipzig Jazz Festival in 2006, a year later he jammed with Nigel Kennedy in Jerusalem, and in 2008 the New York jazz scene had the pleasure of experiencing his explosive guitar art. Besides numerous collaborations with colleagues like Abboud Abdel'All, accordeon player Manfred Leuchter or fellow countryman, oud virtuoso Samir Joubran. Sajrawy also works as a film composer.

    Sahara ~ 1974 ~ Sunrise
    genre: prog
    country: germany
quality: lossless (flac, cue, log, scans)
    time: 48'14" size: 246 mb

    Cosmic Dreams:
Sahara developed out of Subject Esq. After some line-up changes in 1973, this Munich group was signed to Pan (an Ariola subsidiary) and changed their name to Sahara. The album Sunrise (1974) was recorded in the Autumn of 1973 in the Musicland Studios, Munich. This was an excellent example of complex German symphonic-rock, dearly influenced by British bands like King Crimson, Yes, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Curved Air, Jethro Tull and others. Sunrise was nonetheless of an international quality, combining haunting melody lines with complex arrangements. The "Sunrise" suite filled the whole of side two. Tile album was also granted a British release on the Dawn label.
Sahara were never a stable unit. At the time of recording For All The Clowns two years later, only Hering, Hoffmann and Wissnet remained from the 1974 line-lip. The new members were: Gunther Moll and Holger Brandt (ex-Missing Link). The resulting album was another great effort - more polished and melodic with long, memorable songs like "The Mountain King" and the title track. Sadly the band wasn't able to cope with more line-up changes when Brandt and Moll decided to leave and consequently disintegrated in 1977. Sahara's legacy is two really great albums recommended for all fans of symphonic-rock.
