Tapestry of Delights: A Leeds-based group who'd evolved out of a skiffle outfit, Three G's Plus One. After contributing one side to a Leeds Student Charity Rag disc, they signed to Deram, to record a mid-paced soul ballad Just One More Chance, which was written by Jeff Christie. The flip side had a US garage punk feel. In 1968 they switched to Immediate to record Great Train Robbery. Although originally scheduled for release in May 1968 as IM 067 advance copies were rapidly withdrawn and the number was reallocated to P.P Arnold's Angel Of The Morning. The 45 eventually appeared on Immediate's Instant subsiduary label some five months later. It's much poppier than their earlier effort but had quite a grandiose production and good harmonies. Fuzz Acid & Flowers: The above album was a competent effort, composed of original numbers aside from an interesting version of Arthur Lee's Feathered Fish. Holden's fine psychedelic guitar work stands out throughout and is at its best on Morning Fire plus the finale What Can I Do For You?. Another number, Oz Lee Eaves Drops had an interesting beat, whilst the band's best known track, Mr. Pharmacist, is a classic psych-punker and well worth checking out. This group contained Randy Holden who, on The Other Half's demise, replaced Leigh Stephens in the better known Blue Cheer. Craig Tarwater (gtr) and Mike Pon (bs), both ex-Sons Of Adam, were also members of the band, but did not feature on the album. Carolyn White, who used to live with the band in Mill Valley, North California, recalls that they may have recorded a second album entitled The Other Half And How To Get It - Anyone have further info? Carolyn also tells us "Things came to an official end in L.A. when Jeff and Larry and Ron decided to move to Northern California, however I think Randy was the first to want to breakup. It happened right after they recorded the theme to 'Mod Squad', a '60s cop show".

Scented Gardens of Mind: They originated from Bodø in the Northern part of Norway. With a Dylan-esque, electric folk-rock single titled "Graveyard Paradise" they gained massive national recognition, so much so that they still are remembered for it. Their album is a mixed bag of sixties pop, folk-rock and a couple of aspiring psychedelic efforts. 'Asa' later played with the interesting group Taboo (making the singles "Vampire Tango" and "Queen Of Spades" in 1968, but regrettably no albums).

Tapestry of Delights: This Hatfield band began life as The Cortinas recording one 45 on Polydor under that monicker. Their album, which was produced by Tony Murray of The Troggs who discovered them, is now extremely rare. Musically we're talking pretty commercial pop/rock with just the occasional hint of psychedelia. The opening cut, The River concludes with some good fuzz guitar; Council Plans has some nice organ touches; the title track has an unusual intro but is very ordinary otherwise; Thief is faster than the other material on the album; but the best track is the finale Tide. Most of the music though is quite commercial pop typified by songs like Queen And The Pauper. The final verdict: go for the See For Miles reissue which includes their competent, poppish debut 45, but save your money on the now extremely rare original album.

Scented Gardens of Mind:
Illés (from Budapest) formed in 1965 as the Hungarian answer to The Beatles. Some members had a jazz circuit background. Not long after Sgt. Pepper, Illés performed in strongly coloured uniforms almost identical to those of The Beatles.
Their first three albums are full of period charm - euphonious and inventive beat music with instant Eastern trips, snippets of conversation, well conceived harmony pop, exotic instruments and occasional orchestration. These would be internationally acclaimed among collectors, if only more people had been able to understand the language.
In 1970 Illés were banned from performing in Budapest for almost a year, after critizising the official Hungarian politics toward rock in a BBC interview. The 1971 album came in a white sleeve (a reference both to censorship and a certain Beatles album) and was a "beat oratorium" dealing with human rights and dedicated to the black American activist Angela Davis. The music was more mature (not really "beat" music but 12 examples of melodic, song-based progressive rock) and less whimsical, usually with twin guitars and organ. Subsequent albums were quite similar, but couldn't improve on the 1971 effort. After their first split, some members played in the group Fonograf. The 1980 re-union album is, as is often the case, a disappointment.

Orexis of Death: Not to be confused with American outfit of the same name, mysterious British band Iguana was formed in Southampton in early 1970s to release one excellent album and then disappear without a trace, The core of the band was guitarist/vocalist Bruce Roberts, bass-player John Cartwright and drummer Pete Hunt, The trio was augmented by strong dual brass-section – Ron Taylor on alto sax and tambourine and Chris Gower on trombone. The solid presence of horns together with excellent songwriting is what makss. Iguana’s only offering truly unique. Despite the album being released on the well-known Polydor label, it quickly became one of its most obscure items, since for some strange reason nobody was interested in the great blend of loud jazz-rock and energetic heavy rock stuffed with progressive elemenets. Surprisingly enough, even Tapestry:.Of Delights, the Bible for any British psych/prog fan, missed this one! Time has come to unearth this minor classic. The sound of Iguana is rich and colorful, based on permanent juxtapositions of heavy, some what funky guitar sound and jazzy saxophone riffs – most of the songs are catchy and easy-to-get-into, in spit'e of their complex structures. Though most of the tracks are vocal-driven, there are enough space foi" adventurous instrumental excursions, the band achieves a perfect balance between song-oriented stuff and sophisticated progressive compositions (such is the longest piece on the LP, almost 9-minute "Price of Love”, reminding me of Colosseum, Mogul Thrash and other prcminent brass rockers of the eariy 1970s). Actually Brainchild's "Healing Of The Lunatic Owl" would be the closest comparison to Iguana’s. debut, only if Brainchild work was closer to progressive realms, Iguana veers more towards pure rocking sound, making the accent on sheer frank intensity of the early British rock music.

Fuzz Acid & Flowers: The great commercial success as a top notch horn-rock outfit and Peterik's subsequent career as soloist and front-man of Survivor, have meant that the early period of this Chicago outfit has been overlooked, so here's a brief rundown on the pre-Warner Bros releases. Originally known as Shon Dels Unlimited, and briefly The Shondels, they quickly became one of Chicago's top teen bands. Nearly all their material was group originals written by Peterik. Their style for this period was a vibrant blend of Invasion-influenced beat and mod sounds, brimming with melodic hooks, ringing guitars and commercial appeal but with strong vocals and harmonies and a tough edge - the result is some classic mid-60s garagey pop. The pre-Parrot releases are extremely hard to find these days but you can't go far wrong with the first three Parrot 45s. I'll Keep Searching, featured on Pebbles CD Vol. 7: Chicago Part 2, is great moody teenbeat not unlike The Knaves' The Girl I Threw Away. The classic Rollercoaster (Pebbles Vol. 10) is a stunning Who-style mod-pop-punker and the mod theme continues with an excellent cover of the Small Faces' hit Sha La La La Lee. All the flips on these are decent beat-garage-pop too. ... Read more »

The Move began life as one of the most stylishly garbed and musically adventurous outfits to trawl through London's fiercely competitive mid-`60s club scene, and made their name with a series of jaw- dropping early singles that combined lyrical whimsy and adventurous psychedelic textures with a grasp of pop fundamentals that rivaled Paul McCartney's. Salvo's massive, four-disc ANTHOLOGY collects all of these seminal early singles and contains generous samplings from the remainder of the group's career, including 30 previously unreleased tracks.
