    the Deviants ~ 1969 ~ The Deviants 3

    genre: psych

    country: uk

quality : lossless (flac, cue, log, scans)

    time: 34'33" size: 187 mb

    issue: 1996

    Tapestry of Delights:

Originally known as The Social Deviants (line-up A) this was a London-based community underground band that grew up in the Notting Hill area. Farren and Russell ran into a 21 year old millionaire who put up £700 to finance their first album on their own Underground Impressarios label. This was distributed by mail order through 'Oz' and 'The International Times' and sold sufficiently well for Decca to reissue it.

The material on their three albums was variable. The first included harsh punk (I'm Coming Home), percussion dominated progressivism (Nothing Man) as well as long gimmicky diatribes interspersed with none too imaginative music. Child Of The Sky and Bun were evidence of a softer side, but Deviation Street summarized their intent with a series of political slogans, sound effects and a variety of musical approaches which have not stood the test of time well.

Disposable had its moments, notably with good rock songs like Slum Lord, Jamie's Song, You've Got To Hold On, Fire In The City and Guaranteed. The remainder of the album was eminently disposable, however.

The Deviants also issued a single, which is now a rare collectors' item. After a disappointing third album the band disintegrated during an American tour. The remaining members plus Twink formed Pink Fairies. Rudolph also had a spell with Hawkwind.

In 1977 Farren reformed the band with a new line-up including Andy Colquhoun on bass/vcls and issued an EP for Stiff, entitled Stiff EP. In the same year their first album was reissued on Logo.

    Darius ~ 1968 ~ Darius

    genre: psych

    country: us

quality : lossless (flac, cue, log, scans) or mp3 (320k, scans)

    time: 36'38" size: 238 or 89 mb

    issue: 2001

    Fuzz Acid & Flowers:

Darius was based in Hollywood, California and was backed by Goldenrod and Mike Deasy. The album is all originals and the music very melodic with upfront vocals and a style veering towards progressivism. Particularly stunning are Mist-Veiled Garden and I Feel The Need To Carry On. Funk and blues influences are more evident on Side two of the album.

Producer Pat Glasser went on to work with Three Dog Night.

Darius went on to record a 45 for Metromedia as Bobby Joe Ott, Flint River Inn, but the company was bought out by Bell, and the track sank in the changeover.

He then returned to his home town of Cleveland, Ohio and under the name of Darius James played the club circuit. In 1974 a bad automobile accident put his musical plans on hold and he spent the next six years having re-constructive surgery. In 1980 he put a band called The Earthlings together and went back to Hollywood to play the Showcase Club Circuit and despite many recordings, no deal was forthcoming.

In 1990 Darius went back to Cleveland and met Barbara McFaul aka: Honeygirl. He then concentrated his efforts on recording and producing Honeygirl, also producing/directing three music videos with her.

In 2000 he started singing/writing and recording again along with Honeygirl and The Earthlings...

    (Vernon Joynson/Miguel Rodriguez)

    country: japan

This is a highly unusual and incredibly virtuosic project. KBB's star violinist, Akihisa Tsuboy, pairs up with flutist Yukihiro Isso and Adachi Kyodai's guitarist, Source .K. Adachi, for a set of riveting acoustic originals penned by the latter. Each musician is a master of his or her instrument. Adachi's playing is strongly influenced by folk music and flamenco -- he relies on speed and stamina. Isso handles recorder, shinobue, and dengakubue (traditional Japanese flutes) with spellbinding grace, often playing two flutes at once. Tsuboy's virtuosity has rarely been best displayed. Flutes and violin join forces to weave criss-crossing melodies, moving over and under one another at dizzying speeds, while Adachi strums his guitar or mandolin ferociously, as if the fate of humankind were depending on it. His compositions draw mostly on pastoral folk and progressive rock, but the two other players take it into a whole new dimension where romantic virtuosity and the drive of jazz-rock hold hands. Highlights include "Night Dance" and "Short Summer in Valhalla," both breathtaking numbers in terms of sheer speed and invention. The tender melody of "Lost on the Way Home" proves that this trio is about much more than virtuosity. Even the Jethro Tull cover (obligatory it seems with any project involving Adachi) is full of surprises as Tsuboy and Isso mischievously refuse to stick to the original arrangements. Kasa Kasa comes highly recommended: it is one of the finest progressive rock-related albums of 2003. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
