Heron ~ 1972 ~ Twice As Nice & Half The Pricegenre: psych, folk
    state: uk
quality: lossless (ape, cue, log, covers, size: 464 mb)
    time: 40'24"+36'19"

    merion:
It all began in 1967. Maidenhead was a hotbed of indifference, and young people had nowhere to go – so the Dolphin folk club was born. Poetry, music, discussion, frantic antics, drugs and sex...
Folk music was a natural magnet to songwriters and performers who had little experience, but lots of enthusiasm.
Fans of the Incredibles, Dylan and the like, their songwriting talent soon started to appear.
Martin Hayward and GT Moore cross paths with Heron at. Maidenhead folk club, Windsor College etc. Messing about with penny-whistles, flutes, violins, half a bongo - their experiments with sound all lead to a deal with Dawn Label. Heron becomes Roy, Tony and GT.
Steve Jones – accordion in hand (it’s too loud man!) - joins to rehearse at Appleford in Berks, and record Bob Dylan's "Hobo" as single at Pye studios.Heron don’t enjoy the studio experience – everyone too “fragile” creatively to cope - so decide to record only in fields! "HERON" DNLS 3010 the album is born...
LP is a runaway failure, so compound problem by recording a double album for the price of one - with session pals Terry Gittings and Mike Finesilver. Band loses impetus – joins Shusha (minus Steve but plus Martin)
Time passes - the rest of the world think it’s all over – but what do they know?
Late 70’s early 80’s Heron (plus Steve minus Martin) teams up with Terry Clarke to gig folk clubs and Elephant Fair (elephants do forget...)Record new cassette – for promotion and sale. "Open up the Road" General drift from GT Moore, leading to gigs with Big Tom Robinson. This particular line up leads to recording at Steve’s studio – before it closes –a new collection based on some gig songs – “Hystorical” 1991. More quiet spells. Terry leaves to follow solo career. Enthusiasm wanes – gigs drop to one or two a year – mainly West Dean College
    Fast forward a few years….
Holiday to Black Dog results in trip down memory lane – “getting it together again” and reliving the ’72 experience with new member Gerry Power to produce not only 30 songs old and new, but also a video documentary.

the Grass Roots ~ 1991 ~ Anthology 1965-1975genre: beatfolk, soft
    state: us
quality: lossless (flac tracks, book covers, size: 693 mb)

    AllMusic:
It may be expensive, and two CDs of their work may seem like overkill, but this double-disc set is the one to get. Not only does it contain every hit and each single, and every B-side, from 1965's "Where Were You When I Needed You" through 1975's glorious "Mamacita," but the sound is extraordinary, far better than on any of the other hits compilations, and provides several revelations about the quality of their work. Highlights, in addition to the expected hits ("Let's Live for Today," "Midnight Confessions," "Two Divided by Love" etc.) include tracks like "Is It Any Wonder," with a chorus as radiant as anything the Mamas and the Papas ever recorded, and the seldom heard, vibrant "Mamacita." If you could never imagine listening to 120 minutes of Grass Roots material (this reviewer couldn't, either), this set will make you feel differently. ~ Bruce Eder

    Freedom ~ 1972 ~ More Than A Wordgenre: heavy r'n'blues, psych
    state: uk
quality: lossless (flac, cue, log, covers, size: 259 mb)
    time: 37'35"

    allmusic:
Freedom's final outing in 1972, Is More Than a Word, is a study in contrasts. It still rocks hard as all get out, á la Humble Pie, but it also points in an interesting direction in places: toward more textured and acoustic-flavored material that echoes country music, thanks to an electric violin -- uncredited -- on the opening track "Together." Elsewhere, there is scathing blues-rock in the funky, raucous, rave-up vein on cuts like "Sweaty Feet," the elongated "Brainbox Jam," that goes off the funk nut, and a smoking cover of Don Nix's "Going Down." The shimmering, jazzy pastoralism of "&Direction" provides a glorious, smoky, spiritual vibe with killer guitar solos. The final track, "Ladybird," is full of outlandish arrangements, horns, with a complex melodic frame that makes the band sound Marc Almondish. While it is not an altogether successful outing, it nonetheless offers some great tracks, and a view of the band that would have been interesting, to say the least, had they continued.
