Jimi Hendrix ~1970 ~ Band Of Gypsiesgenre: blues, psych
    country: uk/us
audio: lossless (flac, cue, log, covers, 298 mb)
    time: 42'44"

    Wiki:
Band of Gypsys is a live album by Jimi Hendrix and the first without his original group, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. It was recorded on January 1, 1970, at the Fillmore East in New York City with Billy Cox on bass and Buddy Miles on drums, frequently referred to as the Band of Gypsys. The album mixes funk and rhythm and blues elements with hard rock and jamming, an approach which later became the basis of funk rock. It contains previously unreleased songs and was the last full-length Hendrix album released before his death.

audio: lossless (wv, cue, log, covers, 264 mb)
    time: 42'44"

    Wiki:
The album is a compilation of ballads from Hammill's previous solo albums, re-recorded in new versions; all reworked, redubbed and remixed to form this album. All tracks were based on the original multitracks, except "Again" and "If I Could", which are based on live K Group performances taken from the Margin Tour.

Gurnemanz ~ 1977 ~ No Rays Of Noisegenre: kraut, folk
    country: germany
audio: lossless (ape, cue, log, covers, 458 mb)
    time: 1"17'51"

    Obscure 1970's folkies.
Their debut SPIELMANNSKINDER is in many ways the better of their two releases, blending in more traditional folk elements into a darker concoction, occasionally akin to Ougenweide. On NO RAYS OF NOISE they as much as came across as a German Steeleye Span to me! Pleasant, it is arguably more progressive, yet also a bit poppy and lyrical. An acquired taste, I guess.
Vocalist Manuela Schmitz has one of those archetypal folk voices, not wide-ranging but rich in tone and one that fits this style of music quite well. She also contributes a number of reed and percussion sounds to the record.
The instrumentation is also pretty prototypical folk stuff: tin whistles, flute, kazoos, mandolin, bouzouki, banjo and acoustic guitar - but no drummer. Actually the band did add a drummer (and electric guitarist) late in their career, and both of them appear on the live bonus tracks. But the original twelve songs on the album are completely acoustic.

Gurnemanz ~ 1972 ~ Fair Margaret And Sweet Williamgenre: kraut, folk
    country: germany
audio: lossless (wv, cue, log, covers, 426 mb)
    time: 59'38"

    ProgArch:
GURNEMANZ is a prog folk band from Germany, Bergheim, east of Aachen in Rhineland, who formed in May 1972. They began as an acoustic folk troupe with band members John Cremer (autoharp); Lukas Wolfgang Scheel (guitar, vocals, mandolin, banjo, lute); Manuela Schmitz (vocals, tin whistle, percussion, recorder, kazoo); Siegfried Bushuven (double bass, lyre, kazoo) and Wolfgang Riedel (guitar, vocals, percussion, harmonica, bouzouki. Occasionally they were joined by Georg "Köbi" Köberlein on Electric Piano, and Bernie Schacht on Percussion.
Their first LP in 1973 was "Fair Margaret and Sweet William" and "spielmannskinder" followed in 1975. "No Rays Of Noise" was then released in 1977 on EMI's Songbird label. The band were dextrous playing a number of different instruments to complement the sound such as flutes, harmonica, lute, lyre, mandolin and kazoo. They sung mainly in English, though incorporated German from time to time. Their brand of music might be likened to traditional troubadour folk, though "No Rays of Noise" had a more progressive approach. In 1979 GURNEMANZ had planned to release "Blue Moon" but it was not to happen, though some live versions of the tracks exist. ~ AtomicCrimsonRush (Scott Tuffnell)

the Grodeck Whipperjenny ~ 1970 ~ The Grodeck Whipperjennygenre: psych
    country: us
audio: lossless (flac, cue, log, covers, 209 mb)
    time: 31'06"

    Fuzz:
Recorded in Cincinnati, Ohio, this album was co-produced by Dave Matthews and Ron Lenhoff and was released on James Brown's People label. It's a superb psychedelic/progressive effort which is full of imagination and fresh ideas. Every track is excellent in its own right making it difficult to identify highlights, but Conclusions is a superb instrumental and Evidence Of The Existance Of The Unconscious has fine keyboards and makes interesting use of echoed vocals and discordant guitars.
Grodeck Whipperjenny also appeared as the backing band on James Brown's Sho Is Funky Down Here album recorded at or right around the same time. They also backed Brown on a non-album 45 recorded at the same session which included the first version of Talkin Loud and Sayin Nothin. This 45 was later withdrawn.
The Second Secret Album is an Italian limited edition (of 300) reissue of material recorded up to 1971 and apparently issued 'under another name' which is not revealed. Can anyone enlighten us? Is it the James Brown album under a different name? ~ (Vernon Joynson/Matt McClellan / Max Waller)

Godz ~ 1968 ~ The Third Testamentgenre: avant
    country: us
audio: lossless (flac, cue, log, covers, 229 mb)
    time: 43'21"

    Fuzz Acid & Flowers:
A New York-based avant garde rock group whose albums have not aged well but do deserve a mention here. From the same label as The Fugs, their recorded output (I've avoided using the word music) was even more anarchic. It tended to consist of wailing unmelodic vocals, avant-garde solos and various background noises. Their album does include two more structured tracks, Radar Eyes and Soon The Moon, but Squeek probably epitomises the best the sound they were striving to achieve. Overall, their third album is a slightly more structured and successful psychedelic venture, which makes more effective use of sound effects than their second effort. It also contains a few folky numbers like Walking Guitar Blues and Neet Street. Their fourth and final album was more in the mainstream rock mould but better produced. Certainly, the first three albums are for fans of highly experimental avant-garde rock only.
Jim McCarthy also recorded a solo album, Alien (ESP-3003) 1973, on which Paul Thornton plays maraccas. The session musicians included Left Banke members Steve Martin and George Cameron. It's pretty typical singer/songwriter stuff with Word Of Honour the stand-out track.

    country: uk ? germany
audio: lossless (flac, cue, log, covers, 242 mb)
    time: 30'32"

    Psychedelic Baby:
Originally released in 1968, “Supreme Psychedelic Underground” by Hell Preachers Inc. is so freaky and off the wall that it leads the listener to wonder what dimension these performers were operating in. Slathered in a spellbinding sauce of swirling keyboards, snake-charming Middle Eastern motifs and gothic vocals, “Shalom” kicks in as a platinum-plated raga rock piece, the pummeling bite of “Curante” is tempered by a giddy bubblegum chorus of la la la la la la,  and “We Like The White Man,” with its hypnotic tribal drumming and repetitious chant of “We Like The White Man” could easily pass as an early rap song. Dancing organ passages, accompanied by blasts of monster guitar dynamics wire “Time Race” and “Turn Turn” thumps and pumps to an acid-damaged Bo Diddley beat.

Light ~ 1972 ~ The Story of Mosesgenre: prog
    country: netherlands
audio: lossless (flac, cue, log, covers, 224 mb)
    time: 39'44"

    Scented Gardens Of Mind:
Their concept album dealt with Moses and other subjects from the Old Testament. The spoken and sung parts are directiy connected to the scripture. Musically this is in the tradition of Focus and Emerson, Lake & Palmer with high-flown instrumental passages (highlighting the organ of main composer Adri Vergeer) derived from classical music and (to a lesser extent) jazz-rock. This works most purposefully in the opening overture but is at odds with the surprisingly shallow pop attitude of the vocal parts. For this reason the album doesn't hang together in its entirety, even if certain instrumental parts are enjoyable. The album was recorded in Holland but only released in Germay on the legendary Brain label.
