Tapestry of Delights:
An obscure but now rare and quite sought-after album by a short-lived progressive rock trio. Formed in 1970, drummer Peter Dunton had previously been with Gun and Keith Cross and Bernard Jinks had been in Bulldog Breed. Some likened Cross to Eric Clapton and the group made a successful appearance at the 1970 Isle Of Wight Festival and had a residency at the Marquee for a while. Their album contained an epic, 21-minute power rock cut, Morning, and is certainly one of the better early seventies progressive rock efforts. Another of its cuts, No More White Horses, had a great freaky ending.
In 1992 the album was reissued on CD with three bonus cuts that were recorded live for the BBC in October 1970. Of these, CD and In Circles are good power rock offerings in the style of Hendrix and Cream. The second CD, Second Bite, was recorded by a reformed line-up put together by Dunton some years later but it suffers from the absence of Cross's dynamic guitar playing.
After T 2 Cross teamed up with Peter Ross in Cross and Ross.

A Woodstock, Ontario, band. They served up hard heavy rock with sensitive lyrics. Their album for London comprised seven originals, including both sides of their 45. They sounded remarkably like Deep Purple.

One of the most creative artists in the whole italian rock scene of the 70's, Demetrio Stratos (real name Demetrious Efstratios) was in fact born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1945 from a greek family, and came to Italy in 1962.
His first musical experiences came in the early 60's, first as keyboardist and later as singer, and he joined a popular beat group, I Ribelli, that released their eponymous album for Ricordi in 1968.
When I Ribelli split he was signed to Numero Uno, that issued his first and only single in 1972. Daddy's dream, an unsuccessful attempt to launch Stratos as a commercial singer that went unnoticed. In the same year he formed Area, one of the most interesting and influencial italian progressive bands.
His works with Area are well known and documented, but Stratos kept following his studies on the use of the human voice, and his solo albums are a great demonstration of his capabilities. He collaborated with various italian and international avantgarde artists, and guested on many contemporary music albums.

Martin Turner and Steve Upton formed Wishbone Ash in Torquay, Devon, in 1969 along with Martin's brother Glen. They'd earlier played together in various south-west groups. Glen Turner was soon forced to leave due to health problems and the band moved up to London with Ted Turner (no relation) and Andrew Powell, who'd come in as a replacement for Glen.
After signing to MCA they recorded their debut album in 1970. Essentially mainstream rock characterised by the twin guitars of Powell and Ted Turner some likened them to a British version of The Allman Brothers. It took them into the UK Album Charts peaking at No 34.

Velvert Turner was apparently a friend of Jimi Hendrix's, and the Hendrix vibe on the album Velvert Turner Group is almost overpowering, right down to the fish-eye photo on the back cover. Turner's got great guitar tone and a playing style quite similar to Jimi. The songs are also similar to later-period Hendrix, circa First Rays of the New Rising Sun, but with some keyboards added. In fact, "Three O'Clock Train" starts out with a riff very close to "Izabella," then sounds more like "51st Anniversary" in the body of the tune. The really shocking thing, though, is how much Turner's voice sounds like Jimi. It's jarring, right down to the same vocal inflections. But it doesn't sound like imitation, it just sounds like they came from the same places. The songs are good, although not the equal of Hendrix's, but some of the guitar playing is great, with some good feedback and panning effects to boot. It's certainly derivative, but Jimi left so few official albums that this will be a welcome sound to Hendrix fans. ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide ... Read more »
