Brown formed Piblokto! after he'd been asked to leave Battered Ornaments. Piblokto's debut album was much more accessible than any of the Battered Ornaments' output. The title track was inventive; My Love's Gone Far Away featured some effective organ work; High Flying Electric Bird (from the 'B' side of their first 45) featured Brown on a Cornish slide whistle which sounded like a chirping bird; Firesong was a folky, relaxed number and the magnum opus was definitely the gentle Golden Country Kingdom. Overall the songs were more commercial than those on The Battered Ornaments' album.
By the time of the second album Steve Glover had replaced Bunn on bass. Overall this was a patchier effort, although the title track was one of its finest moments: beginning at a slow tempo it builds into an impressive climax and is full of atmosphere. The opening track, Aeroplane Head Woman, gives an impressive nod and wink in the direction of heavy rock and Station Song Platform Two is quite jazzy. Unfortunately, the instrumental Highland Song, which closed side one was too long and though the songs on side two were pleasant enough none were in any way exceptional. The album was housed in a clever sleeve which depicted Concorde and the Titanic sinking into the sea whilst thousands of baked beans escaped on rafts of toast!
After the release of the second album, Brown disbanded the band and put together a new line-up. This line-up recorded the Flying Hero Sandwich 45. When a deal for Piblokto! to tour the States fell through the band disintegrated. The My Last Band album is a compilation, which includes all their singles. After their demise Brown began a collaboration with Graham Bond.
