Tapestry of Delights: This progressive/avant-garde jazz artist has been assisted by a wide variety of artists on his releases. Only Open Music has really attracted much interest from collectors to date. Ophenian is his own record label. He also went on to compose music for the ballet 'Rambert'. He was one of the country's top flautists but moved to live on the continent in the late eighties. The Deep Down Heavy album is interesting, it being an amalgam of Bob Downes' music and Robert Cockburn's poetry. They collaborated on most tracks but also had their own moments; Cockburn, for example, reading extracts from his poetry. One memorable track, entitled Poplar Cheam, includes references to more than 40 underground stations with lyrics like:-
She highgate in her wanstead
And wapping in her bow
And shadwell in her hackney hayes
Makes aldwych greenwich go!
(from Poplar Cheam)
An underrated album for sure and something of a surprise on the Music For Pleasure label. ~ (VJ/MWh).
Fuzz Acid & Flowers: Formed in Portland, Oregon in 1964 when Don Gallucci was forced to leave The Kingsmen because he was still in high school and unable to tour. Gallucei drafted in Bob Holden, a good friend of his, on drums and Holden brought with him Don McKinney, who had played sax with him in a band called The Imperials. With the bass and guitar slots filled by Dave Childs and (ex-Paul Revere & The Raiders) Pierre Oulette, The Goodtimes started out playing at The Chase in Portland, Oregon but soon became a popular regional attraction. Their debut recording in 1964 was Turn On Song, an instrumental which featured McKinney's wailing sax and Oulette's superb guitar. It became a big regional hit. However, in 1965 Oulette left to join Aesop and The Fables and was replaced by Jim Valley on guitar. As well as being one of the region's finest guitarists he was a talented songwriter and his songwriting opened up new opportunities for the group. For example, he wrote Little Sally Tease for the band, which became a gigantic regional hit and was recorded by several national acts such as The Standells and The Kingsmen. The 45 was picked up by Dunhill and the band went to L.A. to record Sweets For My Sweet and Mary Mae with P.F. Sloan and Steve Berry handling the arrangements. Whilst there they appeared on several Top TV shows. Indeed L.A. became their base until their demise.
Dežo Ursiny was a veteran from the Bratislava beat scene of the sixties, playing in groups such as The Beatmen and The Soulmen. The latter released a 4-track EP on Panton in 1967. The backing group Provisorium was formed in 1972 and included the rhythm section of recently disbanded Flamengo (Kulhánek and Šedivý). The 1973 album is quite remarkable, a mature classical pop attempt resembling David Bowie at the time of Space Oddity, but with more jazzy sophistication than this. Even more remarkable was the use of English lyrics, which at the time usually meant being banned by the authorities. The orchestration on this album is really beautiful on the 20-minute track "Christmas Time". This album tends to be overlooked by collectors of Czech progressive rock, but truely belongs among the best and most integrated works. The two later albums have lyrics in Slovakian and are enjoyable for their melodic, nocturnal jazz-rock songs with tasteful keyboard contributions from Jaroslav Filip
A privately-pressed hard-riffing guitar rock album which featured some fine guitarwork and some strong material with The Osprey and How Does It Feel among the highlights. Worth seeking out but currently valued by 'Record Collector' at around £250.
