Tapestry of Delights: This band's founder Bill Nelson had been involved with the highly collectable Wakefield-based Holyground label in the early seventies, which had been responsible for releases like Astral Navigations. He was a fine guitarist and the band started out playing slick guitar-based rock. Keyboardist Richard Brown and guitarist Nick Clarke left shortly before the release of their debut album Axe Victim, which was a promising start. In 1974 the band embarked on their first major tour as support to Cockney Rebel. Bill Nelson disbanded the group in August of that year because of dissatisfaction with its progress and thus former members of Cockney Rebel, also in a period of transition, Milton Reame-James and Paul Jeffreys, were recruited for the new line-up along with ex-Hackensack drummer Simon Fox. Jeffreys and Reame-James soon left but with the addition of Charlie Tumahai, a New Zealander, the band continued as a three-piece. The line-up recorded Futurama, which was produced by Queen producer Ray Thomas Baker. Charlie Tumahai had also spent some time in Australia prior to travelling to the UK. His best known band prior to leaving Australia was Mississippi who went on to form the nucleus of The Little River Band. Keyboardist Andy Clarke (aka Simon Andrew-Clarke ex-Upp) was recruited in mid-1975 and with Nelson himself handling production duties they recorded the ambitious Sunburst Finish the following year. Despite considerable promotion it didn't bring them the success many had predicted and the same fate befell the follow-up, Modern Music. Reame-James and Jeffreys later joined Chartreuse. Jeffreys was tragically killed in the Lockerbie air disaster in 1989. ~ (Vernon Joynson/Jim McMaster)
