Based in West London, this interesting psychedelic group started life in 1964 as The Side Kicks and later changed their name to The Key. Apparently, their drummer made an acetate of recordings from this era. By 1967, they had changed their name again to Kaleidoscope and signed to Fontana.
Their first 45, Flight From Ashiya, was an amalgam of pop and psychedelia, it told the story of the pilot of a crashing aeroplane. It picked up quite a lot of airplay but failed to chart. Some collectors seek out the Dutch release, which came with a different picture sleeve. After a further, equally good 45 (A Dream For Julie), sadly also flopped, the group were afforded the opportunity to record an album. The result, Tangerine Dream was a varied collection of psychedelic pop with whimsical lyrics often delivered in that breathless style that characterised the UK genre. It featured both sides of their debut 45 and the flip of their second (Please Excuse My Face). The opening track was fittingly called Kaleidoscope. Other highlights were Dive Into Yesterday, a typical slice of whimsical pop psychedelia; (Further Reflections) In The Room Of Percussion, which had some great vocals and out of tune strings; A Lesson Perhaps, with its spoken lyrics; and The Sky Children, a fairytale dream, which was very much a preview of some of the material on their second album. Tangerine Dream came in a superb psychedelic sleeve.
The band appeared on several BBC radio shows for overseas broadcast which brought them into contact with deejay David Symonds who became their manager. BBC transcription discs of this material exist but are rarely offered for sale and are obviously expensive. There's also been a bootleg EP containing versions of Flight From Ashiya, A Dream For Julie, The Murder of Lewis Tollani and Dive Into Yesterday from these sessions, and the sessions also make up the bonus material included with the Footprint CD reissues.
Their next 45, Jenny Artichoke, was distinctly less psychedelic than the previous two. Its singalong style makes it less interesting too, but the fact it was not featured on either of their albums has made it collectable.
Their second album Faintly Blowing had a slightly more 'progressive' feel and contained psychedelic gems like Music with its liberal use of phasing and electronic sound effects, and Snapdragon, along with acoustic numbers like Poems and I'll Kiss You Once. Many of the songs had a story line or moral, none more so than A Story From Tom Blitz, the fictional story of an unfortunate traveller who tries to chat up a pretty female on a train journey in the USA. The girl slips him a potent liquid which gets him drunk and he ends up in the County Jail with a sentence of six months hard labour. Whilst in jail he pals up with an old cowboy, for whom he is caught trying to steal a horse and duly receives an extended sentence!
Their last two 45s, Do It Again For Jeffrey and Balloon, were very much in the style of Jenny Artichoke and were less interesting. The 'B' sides were from the Faintly Blowing album but the fact the 'A' sides were unavailable elsewhere has made them minor collectables.
With the decade at a close and a commercial breakthrough still eluding them the group agreed a change of name to Fairfield Parlour and with it came a different musical direction and label (Vertigo), although they also recorded a one-off 45 for the Isle of Wight festival (under the name I Luv Wight).
Sadly, on 1st May 1999, Steve Clarke was killed by a car as he walked across Chelsea Bridge in London.

One of the few american sounding italian bands, and so convincing that even Vernon Joynson, in his 1988 book The Flashback included them in the US psychedelia section!
Circus 2000, from Turin, were formed in 1970 and released late that year both their first album and single (containing italian versions of two songs from the LP).
The album had no line-up references on the cover, and many people at the time thought they were an english or american band. It contains ten songs, with a very short running time, with strong californian psych influence and the beautiful female voice of Silvana Aliotta above all. A mediocre album, not representative of the italian style, yet it's regarded by many as a very nice one. I am the witch (also on single in the italian version Io, la strega) is one of the best cuts.
As so many other bands throughout the world had to do, Circus 2000 had to alternate between the most original and inventive material (sung in english) on the LP and more commercial tracks (in italian) on singles, and they released Regalami un sabato sera in 1971 (backed by a very nice Ho regalato i capelli) used in a popular TV series.
Second album came in 1972, still in english but with a slightly more polished sound and some progressive influences. An escape from a box is again a very short album, around 33 minutes, but the five songs are longer and the opening Hey man (also released as a single) the best track.
After 1973 singer Silvana Aliotta tried a solo career (as Silvana dei Circus 2000) with some singles but the choice proved to be not successful.
Original drummer Johnny Betti founded the small Shirak label and formed Living Life along with guitarist Quartarone. The latter was also involved in the Il vangelo secondo Barabba album.
Drummer Dede Lo Previte played with Duello Madre, Nova and Kim & the Cadillacs.

Originally from Warwick, The Edgar Broughton Band were an important part of the underground scene in the late sixties and early seventies. The Edgar Broughton Band's vocal style was undoubtedly influenced by the growling Captain Beefheart and their first two albums as a three-piece, while containing some interesting ideas lyrically, were patchy musically. Highlights included Death Of An Electric Citizen and American Boy Soldier from Wasa Wasa and Aphrodite, Momma's Reward and The Moth from Sing Brother Sing. Recruitment of Victor Unitt (formerly connected with The Pretty Things) led to a more accessible style musically but they remained an underground politico / rock band. Their third album, the infamous meat cover self-titled album remains their supreme achievement. In particular Side One is a tour de force of evocative lyrics, good rock music and an excellent acoustic track Poppy - a 1971 equivalent of The Stranglers' Golden Brown.
Their fourth album has a gimmick cover (hence the title Inside Out) and is stronger lyrically than musically. Highlights are Get Out Of Bed and Homes Fit For Heroes and an interesting song about the sexual possibilities of a rake. Their fifth album and last to feature Victor Unitt - Oora - is more mainstream rock and makes use of girl backing singers. Highlights are Hurricane Man, Things On My Mind and Exhibits From A New Museum. The band then had a three year sabbatical from recording and even then Bandages was delayed a further year due to legal wrangles. Highlights were I Want To Lie and Signal Inspector. Their seventh studio album Parlez Vous Anglais was recorded in 1979 and their eighth Superchip in 1982. Neither of the last two can be recommended even if Peter Hope-Evans of Medicine Head played harmonica on two tracks of the Parlez Vous Anglais album. The Edgar Broughton Band may not have made it big but they endeared themselves to the early seventies concert-going public because of their extensive gigging and appearances at most of the UK open-air festivals of the time. They were very popular on the Continent, particularly Germany, and with the Broughton's mum driving the tour bus they became known as the 'Legendary' Edgar Broughton Band.
Their manager was killed in a tour bus road accident, Edgar suffered mental health problems but the band survived and were still touring in the early nineties when Edgar had become a social worker. All their studio albums are now available on CD. incidentally Steve Broughton appeared on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.
