Tapestry of Delights: Formed in Ireland by Taylor (ex-Eire Apparent) their mildly flavoured folksy album is surprisingly hard to find. Not that locating it would be a very rewarding musical experience. The music is gentle, almost bland and although it contains some nice melodic patterns, you're bound to have forgotten them quickly. They were obviously influenced by The Byrds. The album begins with a good version of their Rock And Roll Star and June Tremayne and The Badlands Of Ardguzth are full of ringing guitars. Best of the melodic, folky songs are The Trapper and The Good Life I Have Known. There's also a heavy rockin' version of Dion's Daddy Rollin'. Only recommended for fans of melodic acoustic folk. John Jones and his brother Trevor had earlier played in the Australian band Sweatty Betty. When group split, the Jones brothers formed Jonesy, Taylor joined Brown and O'Brien, Mercer went solo and Scott joined T.F. Much then Bruno AD. (Marcel Koopman/Costas Arvantis/Vernon Joynson/Jim Mc Master).

Scented Gardens Of the Mind :
Although they only released one album, Allusa Fallax were formed in the mid-sixties and released several singles of minor interest. By contrast, their album is a masterpiece of complex progressive rock. All tracks make up a delightful, continuous suite of shifting dynamics, ranging from spoken parts with avant-garde noises to refined instrumental arrangements with flute, piano, string ensemble, electric and acoustic guitars and a lot of percussion, resembling the best of Gentle Giant. The interwoven vocal parts are the only ingredient that could possibly have been improved. Overall there is a strong classical music influence, giving the impression of serious musical competence. The album is highly recommended to fans of the uppermost Italian musical grandeur (a brand of music usually labeled ‘megalomania’ by ignorant rock reviewers).

From ProgressiveRock :
Hailing from Holland, Trace featured the talents of the Van Der Linden brothers. Rick, the classically trained keyboard player, cut his teeth with classical performance, before leading Ekseption (sic) for nearly five years. That band found considerable success by rocking up classical adaptations and jazz standards, though offered little more than novelty. However, this would become a popular Dutch variant of Prog. Drummer Pierre was in several Dutch rock bands, including Brainbox and Focus. In 1974, the brothers joined up with bassist Jaap Van Eik to form Trace, since the name Ace was already in use. Unsurprisingly, the album offers a combination of classical adaptations interspersed with original numbers. The original numbers, such as the jazzy "Once" and "Progression", are the highlights. Rick was of course a first-rate talent, in league with an Emerson or whomever, and the performance is technically perfect. But it really was nothing more than an exercise. Again unsurprisingly, the album went gold in their native Holland. Trace released a second album, but with English drummer Ian Mosley, fresh from Wolf. The first side contained a continuous suite written by Rick and overall the album felt more varied, even introducing a little guitar and vocal into the equation. "Opus 1065" was a standout with Darryl Way adding violin. Again like the debut, it saw release in the US on Sire. A final (and disappointing) album, White Ladies, appeared in 1976, after which Linden would go solo. Mosely would go on to Steve Hackett’s backing band.

They were originally formed in Brooklyn, New York in 1967, although the band moved to live as a commune in Germany before the decade was out. They have a large underground following to this day.

Tapestry Of Delights:
A very sombre lot, Sweet Slag cook their brand of progressive hard-rock with more spices than many. Almost all tracks (invariably written by Kerensky) are depressed, bitter and subtly menacing. Although it's hard to point out any highlights, the overall atmosphere of despair and waste is so strong that it permeates all rock conventions, turning this album into a document of some of the darker conditions of the human soul. There are also quite a few excellent and very discordant guitar solos to be found here. It may take some time to explore all the hidden and suppressed fear in this music, but it is rewarding to do so. (Marcel Koopman).
