Dreams Fantasies & Nightmares:
A Quebec quartet, although the lyrics are sung in "English". They have a powerful rhythm section, strong vocals and some good guitar leads which came off best on cuts like Satanic, Winter Slutch and Untruth Story. By contrast Strawberry Rain, which opens side two is a little mellower with more melodic guitar work, as is Freedom, which closes the disc. Marie-Claire and Richard Séguin assist on vocals on this one.

Fuzz Acid & Flowers:
From Memphis, Tennessee, Dave Hall was a guitarist in this band, which split up when two of its members were killed in a car crash in July 1970. The album is over-rated, although the reissue is probably worth purchasing if only for the inter-whirling organ and guitar, and the resultant psychedelic haze on its best track, Within Your State Of Mind.

the Crack In The Cosmic Egg:
Krokodil (German for "Crocodile") were constantly promoted by the labels they signed to as a Krautrock band, yet though they had the spirit of Krautrock in their veins, the truth was that they were Swiss! Naturally, Liberty tried to present them as the Krautrock answer to The Groundhogs. Well, Krokodil did have blues origins, they really knew how to rock-it and had a flair for the experimental, so they did have the same sort of attitude as The Groundhogs. But, all that aside, Krokodil were innovators in their own right, not at all copyist, except for maybe their John Mayall type roots.
Like most Swiss bands, Krokodil were an unlikely combo, mostly of German-Swiss extraction, with one Englishman: Terry Stevens. Early on, the quoted "Swiss Bob Dylan" Hardy Hepp seemed to be in control, his softer folk and blues mix, and Mojo Weideli's harmonica, gave them a more down-to-earth sound. Krokodil's first two albums were excellent examples of progressive/psychedelic rock and blues, and developed a unique distinctive style, featuring excellent songs and superb jamming instrumental breaks.
After Hardy Hepp departed for a solo career, Krokodil really blossomed as they moved to a more instrumental focus with the extraordinary AN INVISIBLE WORLD REVEALED, an album that took on all sorts of ethnic and fusion elements, becoming like a hybrid of Amon Dььl II, Man and Third Ear Band, all mixed into that unique Krokodil style. A key to its success is Dieter Dierks excellent recording, which makes much use of his patent echo techniques, phasing and the distinctive Dierks Studio Mellotron. Ethnic elements had figured in earlier Krokodil recordings, but not so much as here, where the sitar, tablas and flute are heavily featured. Krokodil had become the finest of Swiss Krautrock bands. The Second Battle CD reissue also contains an excellent 27 minutes of jam sessions as a bonus. Also at this time, Liberty's budget label Sunset presented a Dьde Dьrst solo album under the banner of "Krokodil Solo", which surely showed how important Krokodil had become.
A change of label, to Bacillus Records, their next album GETTING UP FOR THE MORNING offered a similar blending of rock, blues and ethnic styles, though in a more condensed and song-based concoction, acting as an ideal introduction to the band. The swan song, the double album SWEAT AND SWIM, though it had a couple of duff tracks (it's an extremely varied album) also contained some of their best, not least so the 17 minute cosmic-ethnic trip "Linger" recalling the masterworks of AN INVISIBLE WORLD REVEALED, and venturing on to new unexplored territory. Right down to the end, Krokodil were innovators with their own musical vision.
