Cosmic Dreams: Why didn't this group record more than just one album? Their self-titled album is a
heavy progressive masterpiece with excellent, Hendrix-influenced guitar work and vocals
by Frank Diez. Armageddon was the start of his long and impressive career. Their
album had six tracks, and two of them were cover versions. Most impressive was the 10
minute version of Jeff Beck Group's "Rice Pudding". This track had some of the
greatest heavy guitar riffing to appear on a German record. Their version of Spooky
Tooth's "Better By You, Better Than Me" was also competent enough. In addition, both
Frank Diez and Manfred Galatik wrote great songs, as typified by the tracks "People
Talking" and "Open". Michael Nurnberg and Jurgen Lorenzen provided a strong backing.
Armageddon's album has rocketed in price during recent years, due to the ever increasing
interest. However, demand for the group was poor way back in 1970, and Armaggedon soon
broke up. Diez never played material with a similar energy again, his next step was
to join the 'slightly-above-average' jazz-rockers
Emergency. Luckily
the Armaggedon album was released on CD in 1991 with a sharp and clean digitally
remastered sound (in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies)

This group formed in 1965 as the Bubbles and made their first single in 1966 -- two versions of hits by the Rolling Stones and the Shakers (a Uruguayan group).
Upon returning to Brazil (they saw the Isle of Wight Festival in England), they decided to re-formulate themselves in a more Brazilian fashion and became A Bolha. To their chagrin, they were already well-established as the Bubbles and as a dance group. On their first gig after returning from London, the ballroom was crowded with 5,000 people, in the beginning; by the end, there remained 500. Moreover, the bill at the door said: "The Bubbles back from Isle of Wight!"
But they retained the nerve and swagger to affirm their new selves. And in 1971 came their single "Sem Nada," with co-author, playwright Geraldo Carneiro, who is also a partner of various artists such as Egberto Gismonti, Tom Jobim, Astor Piazzola, Wagner Tiso, and Eduardo Souto Neto, a well-known conductor and producer. Working with Ivan Lins, Simone, and others since '70s, the latter was a runner-up in the VI Festival Internacional da Canção (the famous Brazilian version of the Eurovision Song Contest) and A Bolha won the Best Group Award.
The first LP, Um Passo à Frente, was recorded in 1973, and their second, É Proibido Fumar, in 1977. The only constant member in the band's career was guitarist Renato Fronzi Ladeira, son of Renata Fronzi, a well-known Brazilian actress. A Bolha members played with illustrious Brazilian artists like Gal Costa and Erasmo Carlos. They also fragmented into many other groups, such as A Cor do Som, Herva Doce, and others. ~ Cesar Lanzarini, All Music

Crack In The Cosmic Egg: An "also ran" of minor merit in our opinions.
Twilight were a heavy and melodic prog band, typical of the era, comparable
to Harlis or Bullfrog (both on the Sky label), with leanings towards
hard-rock and some Hendrixy edges. Although they recorded an LP in 1975,
which was submitted to Sky for possible release but turned down, DAY AND
NIGHT didn't see the light of day until 2000 on CD.

Cosmic Dreams:
Peter K. Seiler had a musical background from his university days (he studied classical music) which prompted him to form a "classical rock" trio, in the tradition of Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Their first album (1975) was quite conventional for the symphonic rock genre. However, Between the Universe (1976) was a definite improvement, benefiting from Geff Harrison's vocals (ex-2066 & Then and Kin Ping Meh), catchy tunes and great keyboard arrangements (mainly synthesizers). After this, Seiler seemed to lose the interest in Tritonus, and worked increasingly with other musicians, like Michael Bundt. Check out Bundt's solo albums if you enjoy the Tritonus-style.

Scented Gardens of Mind: Some of the members of Travelling had previously played with Introversion, who released a single in 1970. Travelling's album, released on the legendary Futura label, is superb, being similar to late 60's Soft Machine (their Second), with Hasselmann's voice reminiscent of Robert Wyatt. Hasselmann's organ work is also very impressive, literally travelling through strange and spacious environments. Much of it sounds quite improvised, particularly the long passages of "Voici La Nuit Tombйe" (18:00). One has the feeling that Hasselmann's playing has more soul and is less academic than Mike Ratiedge's. This kind of sincerity explains the success of the album. The other side had shorter tracks with more emphasis on vocals. This is probably among the ten best French albums. Hassellmann later made some more symphonic instrumental music with Daniel Haas, previously a member of the group Ange.

This album adds a "chapter zero" to Time's story, as the demos included here predate the material released on Dog Days. These 35 minutes of music were recorded in January 1968, when Tom McFaul, Lynn David Newton, Richard Stanley, and David Rosenboom drove twice from Buffalo to a recording studio in Toronto. Their original brand of psychedelic music had already gelled, as songs like "Introductory Lines" and "Sad Benjamin" illustrate. The 11 tracks included here go back and forth between post-Sgt. Pepper's psychedelic pop and acid folk with medieval leanings. The inclusion of Stanley's solo rendition of "Kemp's Jig" is somewhat surprising -- the same traditional tune would become one of medieval progressive icon Gryphon's early live staples. "A Song for You," "Introductory Lines," and "Elin Experience" are the most interesting tracks. Quite experimental for 1967, they feature odd meters and shifting sections of straight pop songwriting and abstract developments. "Dover Beach" is a straightforward pop song in the Kinks/Turtles vein, while "Waking" and "Lily Has a Rose" fall back to delicate folk, with Stanley playing the lute. Despite the obscurity of the band and the imperfect sound quality (the tapes were discovered over 30 years after they were recorded), Before There Was... Time makes a very decent listen. This band had stumbled upon something good early on. It is a shame that they could not develop fully in Buffalo's conservative climate. ~ Francois Couture, All Music Guide
