In 1967, Marc Blanc and Patrick Fontaine were introduced to Daevid Allen after his departure from Soft machine. They both played in its Bananamoon band in Spain during summer '68 and in the south of France at the beginning of '69. They formed Ame son in June '69 with François Garrel on flute and Bernard Lavialle on guitar. The "Catalyse" album has been released in 1970. Ame son played in all the greatest festivals like Amougies, Les halles, Biot, Le Bourget and had a lot of success from both the audience and critics. The music was strongly influenced by early Gong with long psychedelic jam- sessions leaded by flute and guitar. They split in June'71 for the first time. They start again with a different formation in 1973 and are still playing together from time to time.

ProgArchves:
Afterglow is a five-piece set from Marseille featuring Reno Ferre on lead guitar, Karim Abdelali on drums, Francois Festy on keyboards and vocals, Claude Figge on congas and Freud Chaudeaux on lead vocals (Chaudeaux sings in English and sounds a bit like Steve Hoggarth). Deftly avoiding overly simplistic formulas, their style is a savvy combination of hard material from the old guard (Saga, Rush) and more modern neo-progsters ( Pendragon, IQ).
Achieving a good balance between vocal and instrumental pieces, their album "Yggdrasil" features some clever compositions and contrasting moods with rather dark overtones. Chaudeau's accented vocals may be a little distracting at times but the excellent songwriting and instrumental performance are what really stands out, far outweighing such minor flaw. The album centers around two epic-length tracks containing a variety of themes and textures; they also don some neat guitar work and lovely keyboard playing.
Recommended for neo-prog buffs who want to add a little depth to their collection.

Tapestry of Delights:
A Midlands-based band, whose sole album presents us with the perennial problem of rock without guitars. As little instrumental interplay is possible, vocals, lyrics, compositions and above all the inventive use of keyboards become more important than ever. The result here is ambiguous. Copper Sunset has a nice title and a great 'wrong' and nagging bass-note in the chorus and Many Things To Do has nice harmonies, but this latter track is too long. Generally the music suffers from too many long extended tracks. The outstanding cut Once Upon A Hill is lovable, though, with great eclectic medieval stylings and effective celeste parts. Nice enough, but not brilliant.
Most songs on the album were written by Dave Skillin. They were mostly a studio band and made very few live appearances as they had enormous difficulties finding a keyboard player. Steve Milliner was previously in Black Cat Bones. Other keyboardists in the band were Paddy Coulter, Peter John Tdoof and Dave Watts, who was later in Jackson Heights and Affinity. Peter John Wood had played with The Trendsetters Soul Band and Hush and was later in Sutherland Brothers and Quiver and also played with Al Stewart and Natural Gas. Aldous had previously been in Odyssey and Skillen was later in Home.

Since their demise in 1972, Audience members have teased their fans by reconfiguring themselves several times down the years, but never quite re-forming. That changed in 2004, when the quartet reunited for a clutch of English gigs, shows so successful that the group decided to make their re-formation permanent. Alive & Screamin' & Kickin' & Shoutin' was recorded during this tour, capturing their gig at the Astor Theater in the southern English seaside town of Deal. The group's pleasure at being on the stage together again is evident, celebrating their past with a set of their own songs and covers. Half the tracks -- five songs -- are classic Audience numbers drawn from their first three albums. The hauntingly bluesy "Zig-Zag & Swirl," though, is a new one for the band, but not for Howard Werth; it's featured on his third solo album, The Evolution Myth Explodes. Also on that set was a cover of Lennon and McCartney's "I Wanna Be Your Man," which Audience now further reinterpret to great effect. Equally evocative is a stirring version of "Morning Dew," as well as an inspired take on James Brown's "The Bells." The group's bluesy styling reaches its apotheosis on "The House on the Hill," and across this nearly ten-minute extravaganza, they subtly glide in and out of funk, prog, folk and jazz in an homage to all that made British prog so breathtaking at its height. A superb show, and a welcome return for a sorely missed band. by Jo-Ann Greene |
