    Tapestry:
McPhee and Cruickshank had first played together back in 1962 in a group called The Dollarbills (which in late 1963 changed their name to Groundhogs). By January 1966 the first incarnation of the Groundhogs was falling apart and soon afterwards McPhee joined Truth soon after they'd recorded Ray Davies' I Go To Sleep. He was only with them for about six months, before leaving to form Herbal Mixture with fellow ex-Groundhog Cruickshank and a young drummer, Mike Meekham, in the Summer of 1966. The name was derived from the fact Tony was a vegetarian who was also into alternative medicine, the resulting music reflected the burgeoning psychedelic era. A Love That's Died was an excellent psych-pop 45 with some good chopping riffs and some catchy fuzz guitar. The follow-up, Machines, was even better. A captivating psychedelic intro, some good changes of pace and compelling guitar work made this their magnum opus. The song was actually written by Manfred Mann. Better still, the retrospective Please Leave My Mind compilation includes both sides of the band's two 45s (and the flips are similar in style and almost as good). It also includes two demo versions of A Love That's Died (one featuring an obscure Scottish vocalist who was given a trial with the band before McPhee decided to handle the vocals), along with demos of Please Leave My Mind and Tailor Made, and of two previously unreleased tracks:- Something's Happening and Over You Baby.
Herbal Mixture finally split in late 1967, having failed to achieve any commercial success. Early the following year, McPhee joined the John Dummer Blues Band before forming a new incarnation of the Groundhogs, which went on to achieve considerable success. He also recorded two albums with Jo-Ann Kelly, Me And The Devil and The Same Thing On Their Minds.
