Tapestry of Delights:
As you may know, The Mindbenders started out as Wayne Fontana's backing group in 1963. When they went their separate ways in 1965, it was rather surprisingly the backing group not the former lead singer who made the greatest impact. Their appealing ballad, A Groovy Kind Of Love, was a massive hit on both sides of the Atlantic. They developed a penchant for sob stories and enjoyed further hits with Can't Live Without You and Ashes To Ashes, both penned by Carole Bayer and Toni Wine. They also starred in the feature film 'To Sir With Love'. Then they went off the boil, despite recording a Rod Argent composition, I Want Her, She Wants Me, and covering Robert Knight's Blessed Are The Lonely with less success than The Love Affair achieved with his songs. Even a cover of The Box Tops' The Letter, produced by Graham Gouldman, could only get to No 42 and after three further flops the band were dead.
Lang and Rothwell left for the hi-fi and antiques businesses respectively, though the former resurfaced in Racing Cars in 1976. Eric Stewart went into session work before later forming Hotlegs with Graham Gouldman who later developed into 10cc with whom he enjoyed sustained success. The Mindbenders' cover of The Box Tops' The Letter was Gouldman's first record production.
