Tapestry of Delights:
Mirkwood was formed in 1971 by Jack Castle and Mick Morris, who'd known each other since their days together at a Dover grammar school. In early 1972 Dave Evans replaced Andy Broadbent who moved away from the Dover area. Their album was recorded in early 1973 for the local Flams Ltd label. Only 99 copies were pressed and most of them ended up with family and friends. Six of its seven tracks were penned by Jack Castle, the remaining one, The Leech, was a Mick Morris composition. Musically the material is heavy rock with Cream-influenced harmonies and some inevitable guitar heroics. It's only likely to interest fans of this genre.
Up until their demise in June 1975 the band featured three further drummers after Steve Smith:- Nick 'Topper' Headon (who was later in The Clash), Terry Prior and finally Dave Blakey. They reformed briefly in 1978 and Bowley, Morris, Evans and Blakey were later in a band called Sprinter. A new version of Mirkwood was put together in 1985 featuring Morris, Castle and Bowley from the original line-up but when Castle moved to Wales, where he now performs as a solo artist, they renamed themselves Icebreaker.
