Tapestry Of Delights:
Peter Bardens first worked at The Marquee with Hamilton King's Blues Messengers and The Peter Bardens Trio. He also managed The Cheynes at the time, and in July 1963 joined them too. In April '65 he left The Cheynes for Them, and formed Peter B's (Looners) in February 1966. The following May, after Rod Stewart and Beryl Marsden joined, they became Shotgun Express.
In 1969 he formed Village, who also backed him on his first solo album The Answer. The second, featured "Peter Bardens' On". Both are dope-infested in sound and are a bit primitive in production. Long instrumental improvisation dominated both albums, but his keyboard playing was always impressive. Peter Green is credited as guitarist on Vintage 69, though it doesn't say on which tracks.
In 1972 Bardens formed Camel, which at least matched the success of Them. Leaving Camel in 1978 Bardens later recorded several albums which were at the forefront of the 'new age' music genre of the late eighties. He also has played on numerous sessions and was a member of studio group Keats.
Alan Marshall, who played on the early Pete Bardens albums, later played for Zzebra. ~ (Vernon Joynson/Jim McMaster)
