    Fuzz Acid & Flowers:

From Detroit, Michigan this act were another fine example of the local hard rock and blues scene. Although they actually enjoyed three top 100 hits in the US, by far their finest moment was their highly original rock arrangement of House Of The Rising Sun (a traditional popularised by Dylan and The Animals), also notable for some superb guitar work.

Produced by Michael Valvano, their debut album also sold well, peaking at No. 11 in the Charts. Apart from House Of The Rising Sun and Cryin' Shame (written by Valvano), all their material was written by Beaudry and Thompson. Recorded in New York and entirely composed of original tracks penned and produced by the group, the second album also met with some commercial success, climbing to No 149. Both albums combine hard rock and blues and are enjoyable if you like this style.

The group then broke up and Rick Stevers assembled a new line-up. Recorded in Toronto, the third album, Earth Omen, was produced by Vinnie Testa and Clyde Stevers and is more heavy in style, with keyboards and some harder guitar work. Some ballads were also now included on here and are not their most interesting aspect.

A fourth and final album was released on Fantasy in 1975, with an unknown line-up and style. ~ (Vernon Joynson / Max Waller / Stephane Rebeschini)

    Cosmic Dreams:

A very talented group. Like Dschinn, My Solid Ground and Haze they were among those early Bacillus signings that disappeared after one promising album. Frame of Mind was recorded with Peter Hauke in the Dierks Studio, Stommeln (have you ever wondered how they managed to produce such a great bunch of albums?). Frame's sound was quite refined and lyrical - melodic heavy progressive rock influenced by folk and classical music. Instrumentally, it was centred around a confident and forceful hammond organ. In some ways their music was similar to Murphy Blend, but slower and more polished. Songs like "Winter" and "All I Really Want Explain" have an everlasting appeal: mellow heavy rock ballads from the golden age of 'progressive' music and long before The Scorpions completely destroyed this genre's reputation! Frame could also be more powerful and heavy in their approach, as documented by "If" and "Penny For An Old Guy". This very appealing album had a great psychedelic artwork and of course a fold-out cover. Originals are now very rare, selling for about 150 DEM in mint condition. Some years after the disappearance of Frame, both Cherry Hochdorfer and Wolfgang Claus resurfaced in the group Pell Mell, in time for their great symphonic rock album Only A Star (1978).

Although the Flies are primarily remembered for their punkish rendition of "(I'm Not) Your Steppin' Stone" -- covered from Paul Revere & the Raiders' version -- the vast majority of the U.K. quartet's other material is much more pop-oriented and less aggressive. Complete Collection: 1965-1968 (2002) features 22 tracks from the virtually unknown Brit rockers. The East London band had evolved from The Rebs to the In-Sect and issued a long-player under the latter moniker in 1965. The following year saw two more name changes (the Decadent Streak and No Flies on Us BUT...) and a few personnel adjustments before being signed by Decca Records based upon their double-sided demo disc of "(I'm Not) Your Steppin' Stone" b/w "Just Won't Do." (Incidentally, both demos are included on this collection.) The label convinced the band to shorten their name to simply the Flies and, in October 1966, re-recorded "Steppin' Stone" as well as the mid-tempo love song "Talk to Me" for the respective A and B sides of their debut single. With a great industry buzz beginning to surround the Flies, they were picked up as a live support act, doing gigs with the Who, the Moody Blues, the Move, and Traffic; they even opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in February 1967 at the Roundhouse in London. The follow-up 45 also included two strong cuts. The backbeat heavy rocker "House of Love" as well as the lightweight take on the pop standard "It Had to Be You" -- which made the band sound more like Sopwith Camel or the New Vaudeville Band than the acid-laced garage rockers associated with their earlier sides. The Flies eventually landed as the core lineup began to splinter by the end of 1967. John Hunt (drums/vocals) issued a solo single under the guise of Alexander Bell -- which featured a session guitarist named Jimmy Page. Their "theme" (if you will), "Alexander Bell Believes," is an odd bit of Baroque pseudo-peacenik psychedelia, with a decidedly Kinks-influenced mod sound. In addition to the previously mentioned platters, this CD also includes a few pre-Flies pieces, such as the In-Sect covers of Chuck Berry's "Reelin' & Rockin'," the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride," and a demo of the Kinks' "Tired of Waiting for You," among others. ~ Lindsay Planer, All Music Guide

    Tapestry of Delights:

Originally known as Hickory, this rock outfit is now most notable for containing Phil Collins, who was later of course in Genesis. The first 45 had a slight classical influence and their album was a concept, science fiction effort. Of their 45 tracks, Guide Me Orion, Space Child and From Now On (Immortal Invisible) also appear on the album.

Brian Chatten was later in Jackson Heights and went on to play in many bands before starting a solo career in 1980. Gordon Smith also started a solo career and went to Holland in the eighties.
