On CMU's first effort voodoo blues wrestles with cocktail jazz, mock-Japanese melodies and British pop for a place to live, thereby creating an interesting but rather uneven album. The long, vaguely experimental Chantecleer, with its dual guitar harmonies stands out. The second is miles better, largely due to the beneficial influence of Richard Joseph who wrote almost all of side one. The songs (!) are catchier, more coherent, and yet do not lose the variety from the first album. The mellotron-laden Archway 272 is downright brilliant with quick shifts of atmosphere as if two bands alternate on this track. Side two is less poppy with two long tracks. Undoubtedly nice records. The 'A' side of their 45 does not feature on either of their albums making it quite collectable too.
