ProgArchives: IGRA STAKLENIH PERLI, the ultimate ex-Yugoslavian space/psychedelic rock band, was formed in 1976 in Belgrade, Serbia, having been named after the famous novel by Hermann Hesse - "Das Glasperlenspiel" (The Glass Beads Game). The original line-up consisted of: Zoran Lakic (keyboards), Vojkan Rakic (guitar), Predrag Vukovic (percussions) and Drasko Nikodijevic (bass & vocals). In late 1977 Dragan Soc joined the band as drummer while they played live concerts at Belgrade clubs, preparing to start recording their first album, which they did in mid 1978. Upon its release the next year, the band gained reputation for elaborated visual stage effects and light show directed by their friend Goran Cvetic. Nikodijevic was replaced by rock journalist Slobodan Trbojevic on bass prior to recording the second album in late 1979. After its release in 1980 the guitarist Ivan Pajevic replaced Rakic and Nikodijevic was back on bass, but shortly the band ceased to exist. Nikodijevic and Rakic later formed post-punk/neo-psych White Rabbit Band but in late 1980s moved to USA where they continued under the name White Rabbit Cult. The remaining members together with German publisher Thomas Werner released at the beginning of 1990s three albums of ISP old live material and album outtakes for the German-based label Kalemegdan Disk. IGRA STAKLENIH PERLI labelled their music style as "stream of consciousness music". Their both studio albums, the first eponymous "Igra Staklenih Perli" from 1979 and the second "Vrt Svetlosti" from 1980, are pretty similar in sound and resemble the style from early PINK FLOYD and HAWKWIND psychedelia, to German kraut-rock (notably CAN and TANGERINE DREAM), to HILLAGE-era GONG among many. Interesting music effort especially considering the fact it was the new wave boom period when they tried to pursue a quite different music philosophy. Recommended listen to any devoted prog fan. Since all their albums were issued on vinyl format it might be difficult task to find them, but Kalemegdan Disk may be a good starting address. Sead S. Fetahagic, Bosnia and Herzegovina

from Crack in the Cosmic Egg :
An obscure progressive rock band established in Bad Kreuznach in the mid-1970's, existing for several years (only releasing singles) before an album in 1980. By this time, Ice had moved to more basic hard-rock styled realms, in the vein of guitar-oriented Jane or Harlis. Ice's debut wasn't really any opus as suggested by the title, but is typical of this German genre. The band leader Alexander Russ later formed the Heavy Metal band Foxx, and is now with the instrumental guitar duo Avalon.

ItalianProg:
New Trolls' leaders Nico Di Palo and Vittorio De Scalzi came to a legal struggle on the use of the band's name in 1973, with Di Palo taking with him the line up that had released Ut a year before. The four piece recorded an LP due for release with Fonit, but they couldn't yet call themselves New Trolls, so the album was issued with a giant question mark on the cover and no band name, and the group is usually referred to with the name of its members, Nico, Gianni, Frank, Maurizio. A very good album, Canti d'innocenza, canti d'esperienza is the ideal follow-up to Ut, with a convincing mix of classical and hard rock influences. L'amico della porta accanto can be included in an ideal compilation of all the New Trolls related releases.
Soon after the album release, drummer Belleno left the band to venture into a pop career with his side band Tritons, and the remaining trio, with the new name of Ibis (decided after a readers' poll organised by the Ciao 2001 magazine!) found an important replacement in english drummer Ric Parnell, from Atomic Rooster. With the new line-up and a new recording deal with Polydor, they recorded Sun supreme, released in 1974 and completely sung in english. A transition album, its hard rock style and english lyrics make it too similar to many foreign bands and little convincing.
Another change in the line-up came later that year, with Salvi and Parnell leaving Ibis for musical divergences, replaced by Renzo Tortora and Pasquale Venditto, both coming from Forum Livii.
Despite the new line-up the band released in 1975 what's usually defined their best and more mature work with Ibis. Just two tracks were now in english, the rest being sung in italian and with a much more personal style than in their previous album.
In 1975 the long awaited New Trolls' reunion finally took place and Ibis disbanded. Nico Di Palo, again with drummer Gianni Belleno returned back to his old band to record Concerto grosso n.2.
In this LP the name of the band is "?" and for label promotion the band was named: Nico, Gianni, Frank, Maurizio

Tapestry of Delights:
This group evolved out of The Mark Four, which featured Phillips, Pickett and Jones, with John Dalton on bass. The Mark Four recorded four singles, which are now very sought-after, primarily because they were the first recordings by this personnel. When Dalton departed to join The Kinks, Bob Garner joined from Tony Sheridan's Band as a replacement.
The group then changed their name to The Creation and had two minor UK hits with Making Time, which reached No 49 in July 1966 and Painter Man, a No 36 in November 1966. Both featured fine guitar work from Phillips who was the first musician to use a violin bow on his guitar.
Kenny Pickett now left the group for a while. Bob Garner took over on vocals and Kim Gardner (from The Birds) came in on bass.
The Creation made far more impact on the Continent, where two albums were issued, than in the UK. Both albums are good, containing many of their singles and other strong material such as Hey Joe, Nightmares and Can I Join Your Band?:
'Can I join your band
I'm a hippy guy
Always stoned
And eight miles high'
(from Can I Join Your Band?)
In 1968, Ronnie Wood (later of The Faces and Rolling Stones) replaced Phillips on guitar, although later that year the whole group disintegrated. Both of their Continental albums are extremely rare, particularly copies of We Are Paintermen. However, for the less affluent, there have been a number of compilations, and any of these will serve as a good introduction to the band.
The Creation were rather special and this explains collectors' interest in them. They were innovative and talented. Pickett's vocals were powerful, Phillips' guitar work was inventive and they composed some excellent songs. They were a theatrical live attraction, too, Pickett often sprayed aerosol paint onto a white screen and burnt it. It is surprising that the success they achieved on the Continent eluded them here - perhaps they spent too little time in the UK.
After they split, Kenny Pickett co-wrote Clive Dunn's 1970 No 1 Grandad! and was a roadie for Led Zeppelin. Gardner later became part of Ashton, Gardner and Dyke who had a 1971 hit with Resurrection Shuffle.
The Creation reformed in May 1987 and issued a single, A Spirit Of Love, backed by an update of their sixties hit, Making Time. They reformed again in the nineties (line-up Bob Garner, Eddie Phillips, Kenny Pickett and Jack Jones) issuing a live album, Lay The Ghost (Cohesion COCRE 1) 1993, which captures their excellent re-union gig at London's Mean Fiddler venue that year. The CD package comes in an LP-sized sleeve, with a pop-art poster and detailed liner notes by Kenny Pickett. The band also recorded a single Creation, in 1994 and started recording an album of new studio material in 1995. They've also did some further gigs and had a BBC Radio One session on 'The Mark Radcliffe Show'.
Sadly, Kenny Pickett, the band's much loved singer and principal songwriter died on 10th January, 1997.

Tapestry of Delights:
The first LP is rock music only by association. Taking British folk as point of departure, the music twists and oozes as a vile bunch of snakes, pairing gorgeous melodies and expert playing to ecstatically altered vocals and vicious lyrics:
'You stand before me defenceless
your stare unchanging silent, cold, intense sears my brain
drip drip from your saggin lip
liquid red down your body spreads.'
(from 'Drip Drip')
Rape, murder, witchcraft and abuse are main ingredients to the menu, which is cooked with raging madness, but still manages to taste delicately composed. One of the very few British folk LP's that creates a totally new, dangerous and utterly unique atmosphere. Obligatory music!! By comparison, the second album cannot but disappoint. More common both in sound and content, this still is nice folk LP with some very good tracks. Studio musicians on woodwinds and 'normal' rock on bass and drums sound fine enough, but nothing superb. There also is a rare EP in existence with outtakes from the first album (Dawn 1006) with a slightly more subdued atmosphere.
Their very rare and adventurous debut album First Utterance is now available on CD. The opening cut Diana is very strange and very appealing (to these ears), The Herald is a beautifully fragile instrumental with strings and woodwind, Drip Drip is a decidedly weird series of rantings and ramblings. The four tracks on side two essentially continue the challenging tapestry of beautiful woodwind, strings and unorthodox vocals which at times recall a folky version of early Curved Air. This dark, haunting and at times bizarre psychedelic folk rock masterpiece is recommended. ~ (Marcel Koopman / Vernon Joynson)
