Sandy & the Strawbs ~ 1973 ~ All Our Own Work

    genre: folk

    country: uk

    quality : mp3 (192k, covers)

    size: 60 mb

    misc: spain bootleg

    strawbsweb :

The tapes made in Copenhagen with Sandy Denny first saw the light of day as a budget label Pickwick release, spurred on by the success of "Part Of The Union". They stand up very well indeed nonetheless - a valiant first recording effort for any band. Apparently the first song they cut was the first track "On My Way": it was resuscitated as a Stones-style rocker for the 2000 UK Tour, and has featured since as a "rocked-up acoustic number" in the acoustic repertoire: what goes around, comes around!

Joe Boyd later re-released a slightly different selection of the tapes on CD (designed to emphasise Sandy Denny's contribution, and with additional strings (recorded at the time, but not included in the mix used for All Our Own Work) as Sandy And The Strawbs on his Hannibal label.

The album has been bootlegged by a Spanish company Rockeria Estrella, based in Denia, near Alicante in Spain. See All Our Own Work bootleg. Bonus tracks come from Sandy And The Strawbs.

the Crazy World Of Arthur Brown ~ 1968 ~ The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown

    genre: psych

    country: uk

quality : lossless (ape, cue, log, scans)

    time: 57'59" size: 296 mb

    misc: 1991

    From ProgressiveRock :

Another stanchion of the London underground scene, Arthur Brown had huge success with the single "Fire"; perhaps too much so, as it would shadow the rest of his career. But don’t sell the man short; much greater than the single, Brown's contribution was theatre: his on-stage antics - from fire helmet to crucifixion - set the standard for everyone to follow. Plus, Brown’s musical partner, Vincent Crane, was nothing short of genius. No less than The Who’s Kit Lambert and Pete Townsend produced their debut album, The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown. With covers of Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and James Brown, the R&B influence is obvious. But the album's highlight is the five-song "opera" that comprises the first side of the album. Alternating from swinging pop to psychedelia, Crane's swirling virtuoso organ - and songwriting - is perfect counterpoint to Brown's distinct voice. Crane was no flash either: having a formal education from Trinity college, his arrangements are first rate. There’s sophistication on "Child of My Kingdom" that transcends his age at the time and certainly rivaled any keyboard player at the time. The album was extremely successful, reaching No. 2 in the UK and No. 7 in the US, while the single topped the charts. A young Carl Palmer replaced original drummer Drachen Theaker shortly after the album's release. After an additional US tour, the band broke up, with Palmer and Crane moving on to form Atomic Rooster. Brown would record another (unreleased) album with Rustic Hinge, before catching the (very suitable) Progressive bandwagon with Kingdom Come.

    Fuzz Acid & Flowers:

When John Cipollina left Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1971, he formed Copperhead with Jim Murray and Casey Sonoban (two members of the first Quicksilver line-up), his brother Mario (who later found fame with Huey Lewis and The News) and various other musicians. Their frequent rehearsals and gigs didn't allow them to get a recording contract and in 1972 Cipollina assembled a new line-up with Gary Philippet (ex Front Line), Jim McPherson (ex Stained Glass), David Weber and Hutch Hutchinson. A record, Sealed For Your Protection, was ready to be released on Just Sunshine Record but was eventually shelved. Finally Copperhead was issued by CBS in 1973 and is a superb example of San Francisco Sound, with seven original tracks and a new version of Kibitzer, already recorded by McPherson with Stained Glass. A must for fans of Quicksilver and Cipollina's guitar.

After Copperhead, Cipollina, Weber, McPherson and Hutchinson joined Terry and The Pirates and played with various local groups. Hutch Hutchinson became a renowned bass session player and is still active in the studios.

    John Cipollina died in 1989.

    Tapestry Of Delights:

Born in Leeds on 24th January 1941 Chapman was an important figure in the singer/songwriter phenomenon of the seventies. He'd originally worked as an art and photography teacher in Hull, but gave this up in 1967 to become a folkie. He soon secured a contract with EMI's new progressive Harvest label and recorded a series of albums which you need to check out if you're into this musical genre. In fact, their content wasn't entirely confined to solo folk singer material. Chapman pulled in a number of session musicians and acquaintances to assist on these albums including Rick Kemp who later played with Steeleye Span; Mick Ronson, who was later guitarist for David Bowie and drummers Richie Dharma and Keef Hartley. As a consequence many of these albums included guitar instrumentals and rock as opposed to folk material. After he signed to Decca his work veered further towards rock.

Chapman never attained much more than a cult following over here but on the Continent, where he had a live album issued (in Germany), Pleasures Of The Street, he was much more popular.

    Tapestry Of Delights:

Formed in Erith, Kent, in 1961, this outfit cut its teeth on the Hamburg club circuit. Their cover of The Beatles' Money gave them a Top 30 hit and the following year their cover of New Orleans repeated the success. After an EP the group split and Elliot initially got together a backing group called The Clan. He then recorded a couple of solo singles and The Fenmen also carried on making discs including a cover of The Four Seasons' Rag Doll. Allen and Povey later joined The Pretty Things in 1968.
