Tapestry Of Delights:
This outfit had earlier joined forces with black American singer John L. Watson to operate as a soul outfit John L. Watson and The Web after moving to London from the South Coast. In 1968 they changed name again to The Web and whilst their 45s were in the bubblegum mould their albums were very much of the progressive genre.
Their first album, essentially an uneasy amalgam of orchestrated pop, soul, lounge-room jazz, tribal chanting, music-hall and, yes indeed, psychedelic forays with odd time-changes, shows little coherence. The only thing to keep this building from immediate toppling is the sense of humour displayed on at least some of the tracks. There also is a stand-out track: East Meet West, with an an ominous melody and lovely sparse, but inventive instrumentation. The love for musical suites manifests itself already on War Or Peace, a quite listenable effort. The liner notes by some sixties luminaries are hilarious. With the same line-up and the same producer (Mike Vernon) Web gave it another try on Theraphosa Blondi, which continues very much in the same vein, but still shows slight improvement. The musical suite now starts off side one and incorporates some superb mood changes as well as a cover of Sunshine Of Your Love. Overall the mood is more serious, more jazzy through intensive use of wind instruments and more mature, although there still is room for tribal gatherings and throwaway pop songs. The departure of singer Watson and his replacement by Dave Lawson (who wrote all the material on their third album), as well as the label-change, make Web sound like a completely different band on I Spider. There's still the suite (Concerto For Bedsprings), but the atmosphere is heavy and menacing, rather than lightweight. Lawson's dramatic voice and especially his assorted keyboards, inventively played, unify the sound remarkably well, while the production by drummer Wright suits the music much better. Harsh harmonies and some fuzzy episodes make for uncomfortable but interesting listening. Although in places still lacking in coherence, this is an album not to be missed. Those who hate horns would do better to leave it alone, though. ~ (Marcel Koopman).

Tapestry of Delights:
This band's founder Bill Nelson had been involved with the highly collectable Wakefield-based Holyground label in the early seventies, which had been responsible for releases like Astral Navigations. He was a fine guitarist and the band started out playing slick guitar-based rock. Keyboardist Richard Brown and guitarist Nick Clarke left shortly before the release of their debut album Axe Victim, which was a promising start.
In 1974 the band embarked on their first major tour as support to Cockney Rebel. Bill Nelson disbanded the group in August of that year because of dissatisfaction with its progress and thus former members of Cockney Rebel, also in a period of transition, Milton Reame-James and Paul Jeffreys, were recruited for the new line-up along with ex-Hackensack drummer Simon Fox. Jeffreys and Reame-James soon left but with the addition of Charlie Tumahai, a New Zealander, the band continued as a three-piece. The line-up recorded Futurama, which was produced by Queen producer Ray Thomas Baker.
Charlie Tumahai had also spent some time in Australia prior to travelling to the UK. His best known band prior to leaving Australia was Mississippi who went on to form the nucleus of The Little River Band.
Keyboardist Andy Clarke (aka Simon Andrew-Clarke ex-Upp) was recruited in mid-1975 and with Nelson himself handling production duties they recorded the ambitious Sunburst Finish the following year. Despite considerable promotion it didn't bring them the success many had predicted and the same fate befell the follow-up, Modern Music.
Reame-James and Jeffreys later joined Chartreuse. Jeffreys was tragically killed in the Lockerbie air disaster in 1989. ~ (Vernon Joynson/Jim McMaster)

AMG Review by Richie Unterberger: Before beginning their recording career, the Beatles recorded a few tracks in Hamburg in 1961 as the backing group for British singer Tony Sheridan. Reissued in countless different packages around the globe after the Beatles became famous, this should in no way be considered their first album; not only were their skills rudimentary, but Sheridan takes all but one of the lead vocals on this set of fairly tame covers of popular and early rock standards. Several tracks are of interest: "Ain't She Sweet," with a lead vocal by John Lennon, was a small American hit single in 1964; the driving instrumental "Cry for a Shadow" was written by Lennon and George Harrison; and "My Bonnie," with Paul McCartney's shouts clearly audible in the background, was responsible for bringing the group to the attention of Brian Epstein.

ProgArchives:
ARCANSIEL, led by Marco Galleti, were one of the first in the wave of new Italian progressives in the late 80's, combining symphonic rock influences with modern pop stylings. Their music lies close to the 80's British neo-progressive school with hints of bands like IQ and MARILLION. 90's NEO PROG!
"Still Searching" is their second album, from 1990, and has a much more mature and full sound, with a lot of overlapping guitar-keyboard melodies, some overt symphonic tendencies, and a full range of acoustic-electric dynamic expression. Definitely this is the one to get.
