Tapstry of Delights:
Ex-public schoolboys Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde were regarded by Americans as examplars of that pinnacle of western civilization, the Archetypal Englishman, and were hence far more popular stateside than at home - the English being less infatuated with Englishness than Americans. Realizing early on that their appeal lay in the States, they moved their base of operations to Los Angeles and can be regarded as an American act for the purposes of this archive.
The two met in 1962 while studying at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London and formed a duo, performing folk-based pop material. They signed with Ember Records and had a minor U.K. hit (No. 37) in late 1963 with their debut single, Yesterday's Gone. U.S. label World Artists picked up the U.S. rights to the duo and Yesterday's Gone reached No. 21 in the States in June 1964 followed three months later by their biggest hit, A Summer Song. Willow Weep For Me and If I Loved You (from the musical "Carousel") were also sizable hits but when World Artists failed to pay the pair any royalties, they teamed up with Allen Klein who quickly signed them to Columbia Records in March 1965. Their musical style remained the same, a softly melodic but rather cloying harmony-pop, except for a foray into Righteous Brothers-territory with I Don't Wanna Lose You Baby and a comedy single (Teenage Failure), but they were frequently on TV - not only performing their hits but also demonstrating their acting skills on Batman, the Patty Duke Show, and the Dick Van Dyke Show.

Scented Gardens Of The Mind:
This band came from Nice on the French South-coast, where they formed at a high school as early as 1969. Initially influenced by British progressive rock, Carpe Diem (Latin expression = 'to seize the moment') gradually developed a new French musical consciousness along with other pioneering groups such as Alice and Ange. In 1971 they recorded a demo single and pressed up a few copies for friends. At this point the group already played a lot of live performances. The line-tip on their two albums came together in late 1974 when they decided to turn professional. A year later Carpe Diem was signed to Arcane (later forced to change their name to Crypto for legal reasons) and recorded their first album at Antibes-Azurville Studios in August 1975.
Here they played refined symphonic rock with hints of ECM jazz and chamber rock. Those unfamilar with the French rock scene may compare them to Camel, Yes and Genesis, but Carpe Diem are more similar to domestic groups such as Ange, Pentacle, Mona Lisa, Pulsar, Wapassou and Atoll. The most striking features of the Carpe Diem sound were the combinations of soprano sax and keyboards (mostly manipulated organ and synthesizers). Most tracks were very long (10-13 minutes) with just very brief vocal parts. Some may find their intricate instrumental arrangements a bit long-winded, overshadowing the musicians' spontaneous carte blanche (or even carpe diem), even if it was always done with great care.

In 1968, Canterbury Glass recorded six tracks in London for an album that went unreleased at the time, the group disbanding after interest from a couple record labels fell through. Nearly 40 years later, many of the tapes were rediscovered. This isn't quite the original album; two of the six tracks couldn't be found, and the "bonus" cut, a demo of one of the two missing songs, apparently bears no resemblance to the version recorded for the album. Still, since all four of the tracks retrieved from the original album sessions last around ten minutes, the CD does offer what would have been a healthy-sized LP by 1968 standards. Unlike many such relics to see the light of day in the CD age, it's not a run-of-the-mill psychedelic outing in terms of either style or quality. With the religious tones of both the music and lyrics (some of which are sung in Latin), it's a little like hearing the Electric Prunes' late-'60s pseudo-religious concept LPs, but as done by a British band whose members were playing it straight, rather than because some producers and arrangers foisted a gimmick upon them. There's a consciously cathedral-music-goes-rock flavor to the proceedings, the standard psychedelic guitar rock being augmented by churchy organ, harpsichord, flute, and male-female choral harmonies. In some respects, the blend resembles psychedelic-early progressive rock crossover bands like Procol Harum and Caravan, the difference being that while those groups used classical-religious influences as a prominent shading, Canterbury Glass employ them as driving forces. While there's an earnest naпvetй to the proceedings that might either charm or turn off listeners depending on their tastes, it's also haunting and unusual, and not nearly as explicitly derivative as many such unsigned bands of the era. It's a worthwhile curiosity for those who want to hear what was briefly called "God rock" done with accomplished integrity, though the bluesy demo of "We're Going to Beat It (Battle Hymn)" isn't nearly up to the standards of the rest of the material. ~ Richie Unterberger
