Fuzz Acid & Flowers:
From Santa Barbara California, this band evolved out of Ernie's Funnys. Their albums are now very minor collectors' items, and their material patchy. For example, Listen Girl is excellently warped pop-punk, kinda UK-freakbeat style, busy with effects, but its flip side, Summer Breezes, is bitterly disappointing acoustic harmony dross. Their cover of Hi Ho Silver Lining is also a letdown - a lightweight over-arranged pop affair - yet Hot Line Conversation is a heavy, screeching fuzz-rocker. Their cover of ESP is more excellent hard rock with phasing.
Ernie Orosco went on to form Big Brother (not Holding Company) and released a solo LP, as Ernie Joseph. ~ (Vernon Joynson / Max Waller / Craig Morrison / Alec Palao)

ProgArchives:
In the Eighties NOVELA was a pivotal Japanese band that gradually turned from heavy progressive into hardrock. Their keyboardist Toshio Egawa left NOVELA to start his own band with a bunch of musicians from which guitarist/vocalist Yukihiro Fujimura was the most important. The first two albums "Gerard" ('84) and "Empty Lie, Empty Dream" ('85) are masterpieces with Toshio Egawa (his mother was a piano teacher) as the Japanese answer to the great keyboardplayers from the UK: he has the androgyn looks from Eddie Jobson, the elegant virtuosity from Rick WAKEMAN and the bombastic approach from Keith EMERSON. An attempt to a description is "a harder-edged mid-GENESIS". Their third LP "Irony of Fate" ('91) was a good effort to create a more original sound but sound less symphonic. That's probalby why GERARD's next album "Save Knight by the Knight" and the mini-CD "Evidence of True Love" (both '94) were presented as Toshio Egawa's GERARD. It contains strong and impressive synthesizerplay but the songs are a bit too predictable. In '96 Toshio Egawa's GERARD returned in the world of progrock with new musicians: Atsushi Hasegawa (bass), Masuhiro Goto (drums) and the hugh Canadian singer Robin G. Suchy. Their strong and compelling album "The Pendulum" ('96) is still highly acclaimed and their next album "Pandora's Box" ('97) is also OK. Then the singer left and down to a trio GERARD released "Meridian" ('98), "Live at Marseille" ('98) with the BANCO cover "La conquista della posizione erretta", "The Ruins of a Glass Fortress" (2000) and "Sighs of the Water" (2002). ... ~ Erik Neuteboom, The NETHERLANDS

Although General’s official year of birth is 1971, several members had played together since 1967. Originally band comprised of Istvan Akos (guitar, vocals), Janos Karascony (guitar, vocals), Gabor Novai (bass), Matyas Varkonyi (piano and flute), Lajos Rech (piano), Andras Pota (drums), Sandor Revesz (vocals) plus three female backing singers: Magdi Body, Annamaria Herczku and Eva Varszegi, collectively known as Mikrolied. General made its official debut in summer of 1972 with several TV appearances, which quickly catapulted them to national, and then – international stardom. By 1975 General became a true East European star and was voted ‘Band of the year’ in homeland. All their albums were widely sold across the Europe and achieved ‘gold’ status in Hungary. General also was the first East European band to top charts in Western Europe – actually in Holland with ‘Everybody Join Us’ single in 1975. By that time band had already lost two of its vital formative members: Karascony (left to Locomotiv GT ->) and Revesz (became a new singer in Piramis ->). However, General managed to re-group and move forward to even bigger success. Opened for American band War (former Eric Burdon proteges) in West Germany and Britain in 1977, then embarked on USA tour (including Los Angeles festival appearance) the next year. General went through numerous personnel changes: apart from loss of Karascony and Revesz, Akos and Rech had also left by 1975. In came Karoly Pachari (guitar, 1975, left by 1978), then in 1976 – Tibor Tatrai (guitar), Janos Solti (drums, replaced Andras Pota) and Karoly Horvath (vocals). Solti was the second to leave for Locomotiv GT in late 70s to be replaced again by Pota. Backing singers were also coming and going. Body-Herczku-Varszegi line-up survived until 1975, then Body was replaced with Edit Szigeti. All three were dropped by 1978 in favour of only two new singers: Zsuzsa Cserhati and Judith Szanti. Disbanded in 1979. Discography: reviews are coming soon ‘Stafeta’ (1974) ‘General’ (1975) ‘Rockin? And Rollin’ ‘ (1975) ‘Zenegep’ (1977) ‘Heart Of Rock’ (1977) ‘Piros Picikli’ (1979) ‘General 1971 – 1975’ (1993)

Fuzz Acid & Flowers:
A Michigan-based rock outfit whose recorded output may be of some passing interest to readers. They were originally called Dick Wagner & The Frost under which name they released the 45 on Date and Dick Wagner had earlier led the Flint-based Bossmen.
Whilst Frost enjoyed Top 100 hit singles, their albums all sold reasonably well too.
Dick Wagner later went on to Ursa Major. ~ (Max Waller / T.R. Black)

Tapestry of Delights:
This outfit had quite a prolific output despite their low UK profile. Their Movin' On album exudes a US West Coast sort of sound although the title track is a cover of a Raiders' song and the album includes covers of The Beach Boys' The Little Girl I Once Knew, Bread's Make It With You, Close Your Eyes and Carpet Man.
Formed in 1962, this highly-respected showband from Northern Ireland began recording in 1964 as Six Of One, before releasing a 45 as Dean and The Freshmen (I Stand Alone) the same year. In 1965 they scored a hit in Ireland with a cover of Johnny and Charly's La Yenka and were known throughout Ireland for their superb vocal harmonies.
Their 1967 Christmas hit, Papa-Oo-Mow-Mow reached the Irish Top 10, as did Just To See You Smile and Halfway To Where.
What was most extraordinary about The Freshmen, however, was their live sound and ability to master the intricate harmonies of their mentors the Beach Boys. They enjoyed chart success with a version of The Little Old Lady From Pasadena, (retitled Go Granny Go) and even included an ambitious version of Good Vibrations in their live act. The Freshmen survived the showband scourge of the early '70s and found Irish chart success in 1976 with And God Created Woman. Meanwhile, original Freshman Billy Brown released successful chart covers of Leaving Of Liverpool and Cinderella. By the end of the decade, however, they disbanded, the victims of changing times and tastes. ~ (Marty Childress/Vernon Joynson)

From Leaf Hound bio:
"... However by then, Leaf Hound had already decided to call it a day. French had the most success thereafter. He was briefly in a group called Big Bertha before he joined Atomic Rooster, around the time of 1971's In Hearing of Atomic Rooster. He eventually left that band to join the U.S.-based boogie band Cactus (featuring former Vanilla Fudge members Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice), then returned to the U.K. to join a later lineup of Randy Pie, circa 1977. He also sang in Der Fuhrer, a controversial German rock opera highlighting the futility of war, before finally recording a solo album, 1978's Ducks in Flight, for Polydor Germany with an all-star session crew including ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson and Kenney Jones (ex-Small Faces). Growers of Mushrooms, long out of print for decades (and commanding a hefty price from collectors, up to as much as 1,300 dollars), was finally reissued on CD by Repertoire in 1994 and See for Miles in 1995." ~ Bryan Thomas, Rovi

genre: prog country: uk quality: lossless (flac, cue, log, booklet scans) size: 650 mb
Jody Grind were a British proto-prog act with a full-throttle Hammond organ and bluesy guitars defining their sound. The band (basically the brainchild of organist Tim Hinkley) made the same bet that Brian Auger and ELP did: that organ players--tired of being upstaged by wanky guitarists--are rock stars too. Unfortunately, the record-buying public rarely agrees with this premise and the two albums, released in their late-'60s heyday, ONE STEP ON and FAR CANAL, were commercial duds.
Both albums are included in their entirety on INTERACTION: A JODY GRIND ANTHOLOGY, a two-disc collection that seeks to be the final word on the band. Despite their failure in the marketplace, a lot of these jams truly cook, particularly on the first disc, perfecting a propulsive organ-driven blues-rock groove that recalls a leaner, jazzier Vanilla Fudge. FAR CANAL, the second disc, tends to more standard progressive rock leanings--i.e. the structures get more complicated, the fills even jazzier, and the pretensions weightier--but there is still an over-the-top energy that keeps the set rollicking. The collection also features bonus tracks, including the single version of their searing cover of "Paint It Black."
