Tapestry of Delights: Known by the name of an album rather than the name of the group, Motherlight produced an album full of spooky psychedelia with progressive leanings, which works really well. Almost all tracks have a slightly unsettling atmosphere, originating in a clever use of dissonance, without being quirky. On A Meadow - Lea has good fuzz guitar paired to pastoral lyrics, while Mona Lose bears overt traces of malice. Burning The Weed sounds quite surprisingly akin to US Kaleidoscope. The Lens is Procol Harum on a bad trip and even foreshadows Joy Division! The lyrics are downright chilling:
"I view the lens with terror and in my spellbound fear,
brightly dim in, steady shimm'rin, icy eyes see."
A beautiful album. Malone played subsequently for a host of other acts. ~ (Max Waller)

Julverne offered a different perspective of Belgian chamber rock than Univers Zero, being the light and vibrant opposite to the dark, sombre and cold universe of Daniel Denis and company. In my view, Julverne were the Belgian equivalent of the French ZNR, playing slightly twisted classical chamber music with only a little hint of rock. Julverne used mainly piano, strings and wind instruments - never drums. Their music was quite unique and refreshing - highly recommended for any listener in search of new sounds! Julverne of course released many more albums in the eighties, becoming one of the most famous acts on the cult label Crammed Discs.
Tapestry of Delights: Casey (whose real name is Duncan Jones) had started out playing in Liverpool as early as 1958 fronting Cass and The Casanovas, one of the earliest Merseyside bands who evolved into The Big Three, but by then Casey had headed for London where he formed The Engineers. Eric Clapton was with them only briefly. Tom McGuinness was with them for a couple of weeks too. They were more popular in Germany than here and subsequently Casey remained there forming a new outfit, The Governors, who gave old rock'n'rollers the beat treatment. Casey Jones and The Governers released several 45s and two albums on Golden 12, in Germany. Later in 1968 Jones signed to Vogue/Pye, without the Governors.
From the ashes of the multifaceted jazz/psych/rock combo Spirit rose Jo Jo Gunne. The band's personnel included Jay Ferguson (keyboards/lead vocals), Mark Andes (bass/vocals), his brother Matthew Andes (guitar/vocals), and Curly Smith (drums/vocals). Their self-titled debut would be the only release from this lineup as well as arguably the strongest of the four efforts to bear the Jo Jo Gunne moniker. Commencing with the upbeat pop of "Run Run Run," this album builds upon Ferguson's well-established melodic tradition, which is immeasurably enhanced by the power trio's aggressive instrumentation and arrangements. Sides such as "Shake That Fat," "I Make Love," and "99 Days" epitomize the heavy boogie rock of the early '70s. While Matthew Andes' contributions are a far cry from the flashy fretwork of Jimmy Page, he ably manages some solid leads and equally memorable riffs, such as the catchy introduction to "Babylon" or the laid-back "Flying Home" -- which could be mistaken for a long-lost Outlaws or Lynyrd Skynyrd tune. The band's versatility is continually evident throughout, with the funky and soulful "Academy Award" suggesting the influence of Little Feat. The languid propulsion of "Take It Easy" -- which shouldn't be confused with the Jackson Browne composition -- develops nicely into a midtempo groover that is again driven by Andes' fluid guitar solos. Although Jo Jo Gunne would issue another three long-players, they would each feature a slightly different personnel, with Smith being the first to jump ship prior to the band's follow-up, Bite Down Hard (1973). ~ Lindsay Planer
