wiki: The Flames was a musical group from Durban in South Africa. The band was originally formed in 1963 by guitarist Steve Fataar, bassist Brother Fataar (real name Edries Fataar), drummer George Faber and guitarist Eugene Champion. However, this line-up would only be together to record a couple of songs. Ricky Fataar replaced George Faber as the band's drummer around 1964 and Edries Fredericks replaced Eugene Champion as the guitarist. Baby Duval briefly replaced Edries Fredericks in 1967, although it is unclear whether he was involved in any of the recordings that were released. Blondie Chaplin then replaced Baby Duval in 1967. This was to be the line-up from 1967 until their demise as a group in 1970.
Steve Fataar has confirmed that Baby Duval is featured as a performer on the Flames second album That's Enough, which was released in early 1967.
In 1970, they recorded the only non-Beach Boys album on the Brother records label, produced by Carl Wilson under the name "The Flame" (to avoid confusion with James Brown's The Famous Flames).
In 1972 Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin joined The Beach Boys.

The Five Day Week Straw People were a one-off, studio-only British psychedelic band that did one rare album in late 1967 (actually released in 1968) for the budget Saga label. Its ten songs were loosely centered around the concept of a typical weekend in the life of typical working British people. For a fee of 25 pounds per musician, the Five Day Week Straw People -- comprised of singer/guitarist John Du Cann (of the obscure psychedelic pop group the Attack, who did four singles for Decca), bassist Mick Hawksworth, and drummer Jack Collins -- were assembled. The album was recorded in about four hours in a London schoolroom, a remarkable achievement given that Collins had not heard any of the songs prior to the session.
While the album (simply titled The Five Day Week Straw People) has attracted some fanatical praise among collectors, it's average-period British psychedelia. It leans a little more toward heavy rock than toward mod, although there are some strong pop elements in the vocal harmonies and the British storytelling lyricism. At times, it's reminiscent of the most pop-oriented material that Cream recorded. The same could be said of some of the stuff done by Andromeda, the group that Du Cann, Hawksworth, and Collins decided to found after cutting The Five Day Week Straw People, although Andromeda was definitely in a heavier, hard rock vein. A two-fer featuring The Five Day Week Straw People and The Attack was reissued on CD by Angel Air in 2000, with nine unreleased songs by the Attack added as bonus tracks. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

ProgArchives: Fit & Limo is a couple of multi-instrumentalists folk artists from Bavaria (Germany). They started their career back in the seventies as an acid folk rock formation. Their sound is in the tradition of the Incredible String Band influences. Today the duet explores "world", ethnic harmonies & traditional acoustic instruments. Compositions provide an important variety of dreamy folk sections including a heavy use of sitar. This is for fans of fusion music and kraut-folk, mixing psych rock to chamber folk, "ethnic" arrangements. A large community of musicians accompany the band in this adventure; also involved into numerous side projects (the religious "the god box" and the more rock sounded "Discolor".). From their retrospective (1983-88) to the recent inspired kraut-folk "Terra Incognita" (2004) the band has brilliantly brought folk rock on new territories.

Cork Marcheschi, the creative force behind Fifty Foot Hose, grew up in the Bay Area and developed a taste for both R&B and avantgarde music - Edgar Varese was an early influence. After finishing high-school in 1963, he formed a garage band called the Hide-A-Ways with guitarist Jim Flannery (Marcheschi played bass). The band soon changed name to the Ethix and played constantly around the Bay Area between 1964-66. They recorded the notoriously atonal Bad Trip single in the bathroom of Cork's mother's house but the band ended in early 1967 when the band played Las Vegas where two of the members were found to be under-age.
Cork's interest in avant-garde music prompted him to build his very own musical "instrument" with two audio generators, two theremins, and various other sonic-distortion devices - a bit like the one Simeon used in the Silver Apples. He teamed with guitarist and fellow experimental music-enthusiast David Blossom who brought in his wife, Nancy, as vocalist. A second guitarist, Larry Evans, was added and former Ethix-member, Gary Doos, played drums to complete the original lineup of Fifty Foot Hose. Doos soon left and a couple of other drummers were tried before settling on Kim Kimsey for good. Meanwhile Cork gave up bass to devote himself to the electronics and Terry Hansley was brought in to take up bass duties.

A beat group from Watford whose 45s do not arouse much interest among collectors. Some songs are instrumentals. Tony Kaye was later in Winston's Fumbs and Yes.

Jay Sneider's first band The Electrons came together in Saco, Maine in 1963. They soon changed their name to The Id and would release two 45s that have become highly prized by collector's, the second as Euphoria's Id to differentiate them from several other Ids around at that time. Around 1967 Sneider (now Snyder) and drummer Skip Smith formed Fate. The album was recorded in 1968 under the guidance of Thomas Jefferson Kaye at Studio 3 in New York. Still the band's production company (Elephant 5) chose to pass on the offer, nothing further happened and a disillusioned band went their separate ways. Such a shame; this is an accomplished opus and so evocative of its time. The mood is reflective, often sombre, but also confrontational (as in the overtly anti-Vietnam title track). Stylistically it varies from baroque-rock with psychy flashes to hard melodic rock, and a strong hint of The Doors on the more introspective cuts. The latter comparison used to irritate Jay Snyder but the setting, key and timbre of Frank Youngblood's vocals makes this unavoidable. Jay Snyder recounts his musical odyssey and the stories behind his songs in revealing detail on both CD and LP. A very welcome and recommended release. Incidentally, the opening track on the original demo album, Prelude, was omitted from the reissues as it was not recorded by Fate, instead being put together by their producer. An article in Billboard magazine in October 1968 reported that "Fate's demonstration discs are being played on three radio stations in New York", but the only original copy so far to turn up has a mastering date of February 1969 etched in the vinyl trail-off.

Fardon's real name was Don Maughn and he was born in Coventry and first caught the public eye as lead singer of The Sorrows. After their demise he had a soul act called Don Fardon and The Soul Machine, which had a good reputation as a live band. Then he embarked on a solo career enjoying a major hit with Indian Reservation and a minor hit with Belfast Boy.

A heavy rock group who had a good live act but whose albums were rather mundane. The best track on Through The Years (the US edition) was Freestone, the opener. The title cut, Get Yourself Together and London City were competent but unexceptional heavy rock tracks, whilst Thanks was mellow and more mainstream. The final track, Toe Grabber, was based on boring guitar riffs. By the time of their final effort for Vertigo in 1972 they'd veered towards country-rock!
Bobby Harrison had previously banged the skins for Procol Harum and went on to perform vocal duties with Snafu. Ray Royer had played guitar in Procol Harum. They formed Freedom when they were given a generous out of court financial settlement to leave Procol Harum because they were considered to be incompatible with the rest of the band's sound.
Prior to their first UK album they put out an album called At Last, which was only released in Germany (Metronome MLP 15371) 1970 and in France on (Byg 529325) 1970. This is reputed to contain some good slices of psychedelia. During the Winter of 1967/8 Freedom (Harrison, Royer, Mike Lease (keyb'ds) and Steve Shirley (bs, vcls) were invited to contribute to the Soundtrack of the film 'Nerosubianco' ('The Attraction'), which was masterminded by noted Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis. The resulting album has now been issued in the UK by Tenth Planet and sounding similar to Procol Harum or instrumentally to early Traffic is worth a listen.

Vink and Klaasse had previously played in Q65, a very different group to Finch. All three albums were full of complex instrumental progressive rock, living up to your best or worst expectations of this genre. Obviously Focus influenced them a lot, but Finch were more powerful with greater emphasis on heavy guitars and synthesizers. You'll find an abundance of pompous melodic arrangements but few coherent melodies.
