Fuzz Acid & Flowers: Born on the 18th April 1946 in Windsor, Ontario, Alexander "Skip" Spence moved to the Bay Area with his parents in 1959. The story goes that he was on his way to an audition for the band that became Quicksilver Messenger Service when he was spotted by Marty Balin of the nascent Jefferson Airplane. Balin decided just from his appearance that Spence was the drummer he wanted, and although he had never played the drums before, Spence joined the 'Airplane in 1966 and wrote some of their early songs. Some months later as a singer/guitarist he joined the fledgling Moby Grape, who released their debut album in June 1967. During recording sessions in July 1968, suffering from various personal problems, Spence tried to attack other members of the band with a fire axe. He was jailed at the Tombs and then committed to Bellevue Hospital. At the end of 1968, he was discharged and went to Nashville on a motorbike. There, in December 1968, he recorded Oar, on which he played all the instruments. The result is extremely strange and very raw album. Tracks like Grey/Afro, War In Peace and Lawrence Of Euphoria are among the more interesting moments. Ignored at the time (and one of CBS' worst sellers), Oar has since gained a cult following and is now recognised as a kind of masterpiece, in the same special category as Syd Barrett's albums. After this solo album, Spence rejoined Moby Grape on various occasions, as well as helping the Doobie Brothers (he got a special thanks on their first album). Unfortunately, due to persistant personal problems, he also spent long periods of time in various California social institutions. Spence died in April 1999 of advanced lung cancer. Quite ironically, at the same time, a tribute album More Oar was released with cover songs from Oar by Robert Plant, Beck, Tom Waits, Mudhoney... ~ (Stephane Rebeschini)
