Tapestry Of Delights: Born in Paisley, Scotland, on 16 April 1947, Rafferty's first group of any note was the Humblebums, whom he joined in 1968. Their two albums made little impact as did his first solo album, recorded in 1971. This was full of strong compositions which were an early indication of his potential. He then formed Stealer's Wheel but left them shortly after they'd recorded their debut album to return to his wife and baby in Scotland. However, when a 45 from their album, Stuck In The Middle With You, was a Top Ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic, he was persuaded to rejoin the band. A second solo album emerged largely unnoticed in 1974, whilst he was still with the band, but considerable commercial success awaited him at the end of the decade, though that story is beyond the time frame of this book.
