The Journeys From Gospel Oak album was a compilation of unreleased material from the 1971-72 era. Originally scheduled for release on Vertigo, it eventually appeared without his knowledge on Mooncrest in 1974, and was later reissued in 1979.
When his Elektra contract ended, Matthews signed a new contract for Columbia, after passing over Arista. He never did attain any substantial success as a solo artist and during the eighties worked as an A man first for Island Records and then Windham Hill, though he occasionally appeared with Fairport Convention and recorded another solo album in 1988.
