Fuzz Acis & Flowers:
This band were one of the first generation San Francisco sound groups, with only The Charlatans pre-dating them. Formed in 1965, and originally known as The Terrazzo Brothers (minus West), they soon became known as The Mystery Trend. The name was apparently taken from the line in Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone where he sings 'the mystery tramp', although the band apparently thought his words were 'the mystery trend'. They played at the very first Bill Graham Benefit for The San Francisco Mime Troupe on November 6th, 1965. Later that month (27th Nov) they played a gig at Peter Voulkos' studio. Both were apparently very successful. They also played at some of the early Fillmore gigs. However, their music, which consisted of two - three minute tightly structured songs, ran against the predominant tide of long, loose, free-flowing jams which were so popular in the city in this era. They were managed by Mike Daly.
The band signed to Verve in mid-1966, which was around the time Larry West left. Originally an album was projected and seven tracks were recorded, (There It Happened Again, Carl Street, Words You Whisper, One Day For Two, Johnny Was A Good Boy, A House On The Hill and Carrots On A String). In the event only a 45 appeared. This came out in March 1967. The 'A' side is a fast, frantic number (which was originally mastered too fast) which included some vintage 'Frisco guitar work. The 'B' side is an interesting slower number written by Bob Cuff. Cuff left the band in June 1967, later joining Serpent Power. He was replaced by John Gregory, who later played with Seatrain.
The band struggled on to 1968, but then fizzled out largely because they could not secure enough live gigs to survive. Nagle, who later became one of the United States' top ceramicists, put together a band called Marlow, before forming Fast Bucks in 1969. He also produced a solo album Bad Rice in 1970.
In 1979 Ron Nagle formed the duo Durocs with Scott Matthews. They made one album, Dorocs (Capitol ST 11981) 1979. ~ (Vernon Joynson/Max Waller)
