    Grapefruit - 1968 - Around Grapefruitgenre: psych
    country: uk
quality : lossless (WavPack, cue, log, booklet scans)
    time: 1:05'34" size: 361 mb
    issue: 2005

    Tapestry of Delights:
The band was formed when the Swettenham brothers and Perry decided to form their own outfit after a brief spell with Tony Rivers and The Castaways, a harmony group who later evolved into a MOR vocal group, Harmony Grass.
Dear Delilah, an imaginative effort with a rich organ backing, attracted considerable publicity, reaching No 21 in February 1968. None of their subsequent work attained such success, although C'mon Marianne charted at No 31 in August of that year. Their albums contain some interesting music, with a psychedelic taint, but did not attract much attention. Their early songs were good harmony pop but later on they veered towards a very unappealing sort of funk. The group broke up soon after Pete Swettenham left in early 1969.
However, in 1971 Alexander reformed the group which included Harry Vanda and George Young from The Easybeats, but after one single, Sha Sha, for Deram it disintegrated.
George Alexander was the elder brother of George Young of The Easybeats, but passed over the chance to join the rest of his family when they emigrated to Australia. He'd earlier been in My Dear Watson.
Geoff Swettenham became an occasional session musician.
Of their two albums only the first is recommended.

    ProgArchives:

    Robert Calvert biography
Robert Calvert was born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1945, and moved with his family to England in 1947. Whilst always having a fondness for poetry, his initial dream was to become a fighter pilot - a dream which would not be realised due to an eardrum defect. As a result he pursued his talents for poetry and writing, and became involved in the late 60s London underground, rubbing shoulders with writers for the magazine 'Frendz', and budding science fiction authors such as Michael Moorcock. It is through these underground channels that Robert first had his poems published.
In 1970, he met Dave Brock of HAWKWIND and his career as a singer/frontman started in earnest, as he joined the band as their resident poet who would read his work whilst the band improvised around him, and as their lead vocalist on tour. He would co-write some of HAWKWIND'S early hits, such as "Silver Machine" and "Urban Guerrilla".
To get away from the stress of touring and concentrate on solo ventures, Robert left Hawkwind in 1973 and released his first solo album, "Captain Lockheed & The Starfighters" in 1974 - a concept album about the West German Government purchasing Lockheed Starfighter jets which killed off a lot of their pilots due to technical faults. The album, with its blend of space rock and black comedy was well received, and in 1975 Robert released his second effort, "Lucky Leif & The Longships". The album took its inspiration from a blend of American history and the Vikings, and was made with help from Brian ENO.

    Fuzz (borderline):

    In 1969, after Volunteers,
Jefferson Airplane began to fragment. Kaukonen and Casady began to spend more time with their own 'spin-off' group Hot Tuna, which had first taken shape in December '68 as an outlet for 'Airplane members to gig more frequently. Marty Balin sang at early Hot Tuna gigs, and future 'Airplane drummer, Joey Covington was also involved with the outfit from the beginning. The story goes that the group was to be called Hot Shit but RCA wouldn't hear of it.

Their first album was recorded live and is a fine example of acoustic country blues based on Reverend Gary Davis songs. Their second, a live one too, used amplified instruments (electric violin, guitar, bass, drums and harmonica) and is notable for his strange sleeve and the long jams of John's Other and Keep Your Lamps Trimmed And Burning. Their third album, Burgers, is generally thought to be their best album and offers several exceptional tracks. David Crosby sings on Highway Song, Richmond Talbott plays on 99 Year Blues and Nikki Buck adds keyboards to True Religion and Truckin'.

    size: 218 mb

    Tapestry Of Delights:
Formed in 1966 in London they were part of the British blues boom. They were originally known as The Savoy Brown Blues Band and recorded four songs for Purdah (two of which were put out on a 45, which is now rare), before signing to Decca.
Kim Simmonds was the only ever present member in an ever-changing line-up and his brother Harry was the band's manager in those early days. After recording Shake Down, which was confined to a strictly blues format Martin Stone departed to join The Action and Leo Mannings left to form the Brunning Sunflower Blues Band. Chris Youlden also replaced Brice Portius on vocals for the follow-up Getting To The Point.
