    Aphrodite's Child ~ 1971 ~ 666: Apocalypse Of John, 13/18

    Wikipedia Article

    From ProgressiveRock :

Aphrodite’s Child was a Greek singles group that had some success in the UK, but more importantly, spawned two of Greece’s greatest musical exports, singer Demis Roussos and composer Vangelis. By the time of this album, the beat era and any pop legacy was all behind them. What Vangelis proffered here was something far more psychedelic and progressive. Based on the Apocalypse of St. John, 13/18, 666 was recorded in Paris over the prior two years. The double album was all over the map but that doesn’t detract; it was as wholly conceived a concept as any of the time. From great pop hooks ("The Four Horsemen"), heavy rock ("Do It"), to Magma-esque Progressive rock ("Altamont"), the album covered a lot of musical ground while remaining unique, cohesive and quite idiosyncratic of Vangelis’ later solo recordings. "Infinity", a female orgasm trip offered by Irene Papas, was controversial upon the album’s release, yet any of which has certainly worn off with age. The performances were all top notch, in particular, Silver Koulouris’s psychedelic guitar work and Lucas Sideras’ drumming. The album’s mangum opus, the twenty-minute finale "All the Seats Were Occupied" is simply fantastic. Gradually unfolding into a tight psychedelic groove, it reprises the album’s various themes, drifting in and out of consciousness to a tight summation of this classic work. Roussos left for a solo career in Greece after the recording, while Vangelis would eventually move to London to begin a long and distinguished solo career.

    Cosmic Dreams:

This sextet began their recording career as Thrice Mice. As such, they made one album for Phillips in 1971 and were also included on the Festival samplers Love & Peace (1970) and Pop & Blues Festival '70. Some years later they renamed themselves Altona, now expanded to a septet. Altona was the name of a suburb of Hamburg (perhaps this was the place where they came from?). A typical Altona song lasted for 5-7 minutes, had lots of sax and guitars and was largely based on blues and jazz rock. The first album had a funny cover of ugly tourists wearing Hawaiian-shirts wandering around in Hamburg. Their albums were produced by one Klaus Bohlmann. Altona were among the better jazz-rockers of the mid-seventies, although they never really excelled. Check them out if progressive jazz-rock appeal to you. Their albums can still be acquired cheaply.

    ItalianProg:

One of the few professional bands from the Marche, on the Adriatic side of central Italy, Agorà were formed in 1974 near Ancona, and played a jazz-rock very influenced by the likes of Weather Report or the italian group Perigeo, with a very limited use of progressive sounds. Some of the band members had previously been in a rock band called Oz Master Magnus Ltd.
