Fuzz Acid & Flowers:
This Dallas outfit was originally called Theze Few and included England Dan and John Ford Coley, who went on to achieve considerable success as a duo. In 1967 they played a gig in Dallas with visiting L.A outfit, the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band. Impressed by the latter's tune, Smell Of Incense, they decided to record it, shortening it for AM radio consumption and adding superbly-executed five-part harmonies. The result was a hit single which reached No. 56 in the Billboard chart.
Their pleasant soft rock album was recorded at Robin Hood Brians studios in Tyler, Texas on October 25/27th, 1968, and has some psychedelic influences as well as a risque (for 1968) cover shot of four naked women enclosed in a plexiglass box (calling Dr. Freud!).
And Another Thing is an interesting extended track, much in the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida mould, with echoing drums rolling back and forth across the stereo mix over a bass ostinato. There are also good versions of Buffalo Springfield's Rock 'N' Roll Woman and Chuck Berry's Nadine as well as a few harbingers of England Dan and John Ford Coley's somewhat bland future sound.
Southwest F.O.B were apparently a killer live act to the extent that they reportedly blew Led Zeppelin off stage in August, 1969 (a gig which culminated in Zeke setting his cymbals on fire and throwing his drumkit all over the stage). They generally opened with a set of soul covers then, after a costume change, did a set of Cream-like hard rock and finished with a set of original material. They were also known for their attire (powder blue double-breasted suits with high collars) which were designed by their guitarist, Ovid.

Fuzz Acid & Flowers:
Formed in San Francisco in 1965. Although Kama Sutra tried to portray them as a 'good time' band they also gained the reputation as a good live act which placed emphasis on guitar work. However, the good time image was epitomised by tracks like Hello, Hello (a hit for them), Cellophane Woman and Walk In The Park on their first LP. This album was later reissued in 1973 as Hello Hello.
Their final album was a vast improvement on their earlier work. Many of the tracks, notably Sleazy Street and Coke, Suede and Waterbeds had a distinctly jazzy influence, whilst Orange Peel had some stand-out flute playing and Dancin' Wizard was a slower, Eastern-influenced number. The strongest track, however, was probably Fazon- the opening cut - which typified the soothing, laid back sound which The Sopwith Camel had performed prior to their demise.
Rod Albin, who had been in their pre-album line-up had earlier played for Liberty Hill Aristocrats. He left before the album to join Roadhog and Kasten also departed to Joy Of Cooking. Norman Mayell went on to play for Norman Greenbaum and Blue Cheer. William Sievers later recorded as William Truckaway. ~ (Vernon Joynson/Stephane Rebeschini)

This outfit came from Humboldt, Iowa and this album is one of only three rock LPs issued on the IGL/Sonic labels, which were based in Milford, Iowa. Musically, it has that early seventies progressive feel (although some collectors describe it as a Neil Young type rural rock / folk). Pleasant guitar folk with some psychedelic influences. Earlier Steve Fox and Randy Berka issued a 45 on Sonic. ~ (Vernon Joynson/Stephane Rebeschini)

Fuzz Acid & Flowers: Formed by Michael Fennelly after the end of
Millenium and
Sagittarius, Crabby Appleton was one of the early seventies Californian rock groups signed by Elektra, along with
Rhinoceros or the
Wackers. Their first album was produced by Don Gallucci (from
Don and The Goodtimes and
Touch) and enjoyed reasonable success, allowing them to release a second album on which they used some female background vocals. Their music was characterized by Fennelly's vocals (sometimes inspired by Robert Plant) and his good lead guitar work. Their songs combine hard rock and melodic pop/rock.
Fennelly later moved to England and released two solo albums: Lane Changer with Rod Argent (Epic KE 32703, 1974) and Strangers Bed (Mercury SRM 1-1043, 1975). Felix Falcon became a session musician.
