ProgArchives:
EASTER ISLAND was originally formed in 1973 by guitarist Mark Miceli. They were easily one of the best US prog bands to have recorded during the 1970's. The music places emphasis on excellent mini-moog and Mellotron work as well as guitar, like most prog bands from the mid-'70s seemed to do. Their original and progressive music has its roots in the compositional techniques of KING CRIMSON, YES, and ELP.
Musically their new opus recalls latter-day KING CRIMSON mixed with heavy doses of world music (in the rhythms) and some modern rock sounds, too. Maybe a little GENESIS creeps in here or there, but the majority of this album really recalls no one in particular. If you want good songwriting and original arrangements done in a fresh way, this is for you. If you want a retro 70s sound, buy their first album!

Scented Gardens Of The Mind:
This album was the brainchild of record engineer and producer Jean-Pierre Massiera. Like Visitors, Atlantide was not a real group but just a recording concept. The resulting album shares the same flaws and oddities as the Visitors album, being an unspectactular mixture of quasi-psychedelic heavy rock mixed with more symphonic ingredients. The instru-mentation is rudimentary for a French production, largely guitars with some electronic effects (and mellotron on just one track). It contains irritating falsetto vocals and clichй heavy riffs, much like the worst of Vanilla Fudge, Uriah Heep or the Italian New Trolls and the drum solos are, as always, superfluous, especially when the album clocks in at just 32 minutes. Some acoustic guitar parts are reminscent of Steve Hackett. This is a weak and ill-focused album. Some of the session musicians also played with Visitors, Orion and Carpe Diem.

Cosmic Dreams:
Here is another one of those albums with a very funny cover! The sleeve of the Hamburg band Ardo Dombec's only LP pictured a melting ice cream cone containing a cactus! Inside the fold-out cover the group were standing posing with ice cones, harmless ones this time! The group has often been dismissed as 'bad, boring and jazzy' (I know those words are synonymous for some people), but their album was actually quite good! Sax, guitar and flute dominated their sound. Some songs had interesting lyrics: "Clean Up Sunday" dealt with a nun who believes salvation can be secured by dropping some coins into the collection box each Sunday. "Downtown Paradise Lost" told about getting busted in Hamburg's red light district. They were also good musicians and enjoyed playing strange or complex rhythms, as Soft Machine did before them. Colosseum were also a likely inspiration to them. The group had two further tracks included on the Pilz' Heavy Christmas sampler.
